About this deal

Given the crucial role that picture books have played in early childhood education, it seems pertinent to ascertain the ways in which they have been affected by digitisation.

Unlike Peter Rabbit, she doesn’t realise the carrots in the garden have been planted there by someone and that she thieved them. Of the eighty-seven titles that contain food and have human or anthropomorphised characters, twenty-six (30 percent) contain textual or illustrative references to maternal figures involved in food preparation or provision. Diary of a Wombat is written by Jackie French and follows the diary entries of a cheeky but loveable wombat’s mischief. Rosie’s Walk has been heavily influential as a story in which the text says something completely different from the pictures.Follow Mothball, an adorable wombat, as she goes about her week sleeping, eating, scratching, digging holes and training humans to give her food on demand. As the week progresses and it attains its desires, the story just gets funnier and funnier; it really had me chortling. Her diary consists of sleeping, eating, scratching, and sleeping some more - until a family of humans moves in and she discovers she can get some tasty food if she bangs on tin rubbish bins. It is good for introducing the idea of diaries, along with the use of repitition to teach children words and their contexts that the children may not know before this book.

So much of Diary of a Wombat rings true because of their stories - anyone who's had a "pet" wombat would no doubt agree (I'm sure the author has had one too at some stage). This article explores the findings from the first “diversity count” of Australian children’s picture books, conducted in 2019 in partnership with advocacy group Voices from the Intersection (VFTI). At the same time, the linking of non-Anglo-Australian mothers with home-cooked meals can be seen as a means of signifying a cultural authenticity, a closeness to the earth that is differentiated from the normalised Australian culture represented in picture books. As he proceeds to “help” his neighbors, he demands more and more treats until he gets bored with the taste. In small groups students can read aloud their diary entries and select the best one (peer assessment) to go forward to the class competition, based on the agreed criteria above. When setting out to dig a new, bigger hole with room for them both, Shaggy Gully's newest resident gets some help from a friend, causes more mayhem than Mothball ever did, and sorts things out in hilarious style. I also have Clean Guides (downloadable PDFs) which enable you to clean up your book before reading it!

As the wombat’s week comes to a close, he digs a hole closer to his neighbor’s home and does what wombats do best: sleep. Diary of a Wombat is written in past tense and contains repetition of a range of irregular past tense verbs, such as ate, slept and dug. An activity for the children will be writing a week journal themselves, monitor what they have done during the week even though it might be simple words.

Not only that, she is endlessly greedy for carrots and even when given carrots, she still wants more.

Today I stay in Australia, with the modern picture book classic Diary of a Wombat by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley. For example, ‘Found the perfect dustbath’ is colourfully depicted to aid student comprehension of the term ‘dustbath’. Text-participants: Questions aid students in their understanding, help clarify meaning of words, link the words to the illustrations and assist students to infer additional meanings from the text and images. The simple repeated structure and beautifully drawn illustrations will encourage emerging independent readers to engage with the story and draw parallels with their own feelings as they follow cat’s tale.He is shown to be a fruit connoisseur, and in another episode the big gag is that Kramer could have won a lot of money after being scalded by hot coffee, but he is delighted with a lifetime’s supply of free coffees instead. This is affiliated with Dr Laurel Cohn's Picture Book Diet because it contains representations of food and/or food practices. We have borrowed this book a few times from the library, but today we were lucky enough to win a copy from the author when she came to visit our local library!
