About this deal

There’s no web interface to speak of, just a lightweight status page, with setup carried out via the smartphone app. This makes the system a lot more affordable than tri-band systems such as TP-Link’s Deco X90 but it also means there’s less bandwidth available overall. Security options depend on whether you’re willing to pay an annual subscription for TP-Link’s HomeShield Pro service. Alternatively, if you have a wireless hotspot device, then the Eero 6 Plus system may suit you, as this can be set to use an alternative Wi-Fi hotspot (your 4G/5G device) as a backup should the main internet go down.

Actual wireless data throughput and wireless coverage, and quantity of connected devices are not guaranteed and will vary as a result of network conditions, client limitations, and environmental factors, including building materials, obstacles, volume and density of traffic, and client location. This swiftly detects the Deco units and prompts you to choose a name and security settings for your new mesh.

With Insights, you can check out which sites your children visit and how much time they spend on each. Premium meshes and routers often promise double that rate, although that doesn’t mean they’re literally twice as fast. Wireless connections and optional Ethernet backhaul work together to link Deco units, providing even faster network speeds and truly seamless coverage. You’ll need Ethernet or power cables where you want them to go, so this device may more sense for those having a home renovation or extension built. Moving to the second floor, speeds increased my more than 14-times, moving from a very slow and unreliable connection to a much faster one.

If you want a neater installation, the TP-Link Deco X50-PoE could be for you, as it can be wall- or ceiling-mounted, powered via Ethernet. Deco uses its custom algorithms to automate the connections on your network, ensuring the strongest possible signals at all times. That may sound bad compared to the likes of the Eero 6 Plus, but I’m testing here with just the router. Universal Compatibility –Backward compatible with all WiFi generations and works with any internet service provider (ISP) and modem. We’ve put this to the test, assessing its performance and how useful features such as parental controls are. This makes it supremely easy to install the router: just follow the wizard through, and the app connects to the router, sets up the internet connection and prompts you to create a secure network.

Adding a mesh satellite into the mix, such as the TP-Link Deco X50-POE, improves speeds, as you can see in the graph below.

Starting life on the consumer PC press back in 1998, David has been at the forefront of technology for the past 20 years. I quite like the way that the charges for parental controls and security are split, as you can choose the services that apply to you. Combined with its ceiling- and wall-mount system, this is a satellite that’s designed to blend in with a home. Mesh systems might be the best way to get a strong Wi-Fi signal where you need it, but the boxes can look ugly strewn around the house. And, as its Ethernet ports aren’t easy to reach once the device is installed, those that want to use Ethernet with a satellite device may find a regular mesh satellite a better choice.
