About this deal

With Judith Potts, the principal sleuth among the Marlow Murder Club, author Robert Thorogood adds to the fine tradition of crossword solving lying at the heart of a murder mystery. Starting while the corpse is still cooling on the floor, they venture a series of deductions as keenly observant and remorselessly logical as they are unlikely. It will take a mind as sharp as Judith’s, an eye for detail as acute as Becks’ and an imagination as brazen as Suzie’s to get to the heart of the matter and ensure justice is done. It’s all a massive headache to DS Tanika Malik and DI Gareth Hoskins, who snatches the case away from her, and it’s all catnip to sharp-witted retiree Judith Potts and her two buddies, vicar’s wife Becks Starling and Suzie Harris, a dogsitter who has her own radio program.

I have loved these ladies from the beginning (especially Becks, our intrepid vicar's wife with hidden depths), and it was such a delight to reunite with them for their next big case. Robert Thorogood is the creator of the hit BBC One TV series Death in Paradise, and he has written a series of spin-off novels featuring DI Richard Poole. Not only do they have to convince the police that a murder was actually committed, they also have to prove how it could possibly have been accomplished. Upon breaking down the study door, the group is shocked to discover that Sir Peter is dead, seemingly crushed by a large mahogany cabinet that has fallen away from the wall. The motley crew of the informal Marlow Murder Club reunites for this sequel as fabulous as the first. Becks tells Judith the comments on her post were complimentary of Howard, although they do mention that Howard’s dad and Stefan were crooks. Biography: Robert Thorogood is the creator of the hit BBC One TV series Death in Paradise, and he has written a series of spin-off novels featuring DI Richard Poole. Given this close association it’s no surprise that just as detectives and detective fiction have provided the answers to many crossword clues, crosswords have featured prominently in many notable murder mysteries. It's been an enjoyable and murder-free time for Judith, Suzie and Becks - AKA the Marlow Murder Club - since the events of last year.

Judith figures that Danny has wanted Liz dead for ages because she didn’t want to sell her family’s land, which is worth millions. For her part, Judith is certain that Sir Peter was murdered and so determines that they must catch the killer before there’s yet more murder in Marlow. It’s all going, well, swimmingly until she has an unfortunate encounter with a swan and has to decide whether to tackle the beast or give up on her dip. Marple), along with Becks the vicar’s wife, and Susie the dogwalker find themselves in a head-scratching, utterly clever country house, locked-room murder mystery. Rather than focusing on the undeniably gritty nature of murder, Thorogood centres the story on the characters’ reactions and motivations, including the Marlow Murder Club’s collective fascination with crime and the solving thereof.

Thorogood follows up 2021’s The Marlow Murder Club with another brisk and breezy cozy featuring 78-year-old Judith Potts, who creates crosswords for national newspapers, and her friends Suzie and Becks.Thorogood’s characters are vivid and companionable, the dialogue sparkles with wit, and the plot gives armchair detectives a fighting chance to solve the mystery. Becks, the vicar’s rule-following wife, and Suzie, a free-spirited dog walker turned local radio personality, may be unlikely companions for Judith, but their friendships are rooted in respect. The most exciting thing on the horizon is the upcoming wedding of Marlow grandee, Sir Peter Bailey, to his nurse, Jenny Page.

On foreign soil, “officially and legally” they cannot gather evidence, question witnesses, or make arrests. Convinced something foul will occur, she attends the party but is still shocked when Sir Peter himself is killed. The crossword and the classic murder mystery are two types of puzzle that exploded in popularity following World War I.When he was ten years old, he read his first proper novel - Agatha Christie's Peril at End House - and he's been in love with the genre ever since. Putting aside all thoughts of crossword puzzles, Judith ropes her best friend Suzie Harris, a part-time dogwalker and local radio celeb, into attending the party with her. He has that nothing-to-lose attitude, given that his career is swirling down the toilet bowl anyway. The study door is locked; the only key is in Sir Peter’s pocket; and every plausible suspect, from Sir Peter’s intended to his two children to Chris Shepherd, the White Lodge gardener who has every reason to hold a grudge against his employer, has a solid alibi. The mounting evidence of ever more and ever worse skulduggery will pull Tempe deeper and deeper down what even she sees as a rabbit hole before she confronts a ringleader implicated in “Drugs.
