About this deal

Saunders says this was “a light-hearted exaggeration; something highly competitive astronauts and golfers are prone to. Once dropped, the kinetic energy of these objects will blast a crater into the surface, sending out rays (ejecta rays) around the object.

But the materials didn’t matter much; the depth was mainly affected by the density and diameter of the ball and the height from which it was dropped. An old theory predicts a depth exponent of 1/4 by assuming that most of the meteorite’s energy goes into lifting grains out of the crater space. They created simple bowls with raised rims, bowls with small mountains in the middle, and bowls with rings around them, depending on the impact energy and bead size. This meant that the ball skipped across the sand, further than expected – as shown on the graph above.

A steel ball bearing of diameter 17mm and mass 10g was dropped from heights ranging from 10cm to 50cm – in 5cm steps.

Different-sized objects that are nearly spherical (at least 3 total), such a rubber ball, a baseball, and a piece of roundish fruit.

The Chicxulub Crater, on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, was most likely created by a comet or asteroid that hit Earth about 65 million years ago. The next step is to model the ball as a projectile, to investigate further the independence of horizontal and vertical components of motion. you can see that the volume of the crater is the volume of the "truncated inverted cone" plus the volume of the bit of sphere. Measuring large heights was impractical with metre rules, and only a certain number of balls were available at a good range of diameters.

Most meteors burn up in the atmosphere as “ shooting stars” before ever colliding with the surface of the Earth. The only way to know for sure is to plot a graph of log length against Angle for those last five points. Here, we account for two other effects: the density and gravitational accelerations of the impactor and object. It comprised “a Wilson Staff Dyna-Power 6-iron head” which could be attached to a “collapsible tool” or scooper intended for collecting rock samples”.It turned out that sand doesn’t splash like a liquid, but the resulting pits looked a lot like craters on the moon. Scientists say half the species on Earth—including the dinosaurs—went extinct as a result of the impact. We can now fairly accurately determine that ball number one travelled 24 yards, and ball number two travelled 40 yards," says Cheshire-based Saunders, who has been working with the United States Golf Association (USGA) external-link to mark the anniversary.
