Some varieties - like Cabbages, Broccoli, Leeks and Kale - are very hardy and will be fine throughout the winter. Lettuces prefer being out of the scorching sun and appreciate the increased rainfall (even if we don’t! Giant Winter is an excellent late variety producing thick leeks that will hold well in the ground for a long time and are winter hardy.

Heat-lovers like aubergine, chilli and tomato plants do best when planted in spring in a sunny warm spot. It’s easy to grow leeks from plug plants – just follow the instructional leaflet that will arrive with your plug plants. In the kitchen: Courgettes are a wonderfully versatile vegetable – they can be used in stir-fries, soups, casseroles, salads, pasta dishes, pickled, the list goes on.
