Lettuces prefer being out of the scorching sun and appreciate the increased rainfall (even if we don’t! Giant Winter is an excellent late variety producing thick leeks that will hold well in the ground for a long time and are winter hardy.

Heat-lovers like aubergine, chilli and tomato plants do best when planted in spring in a sunny warm spot. It’s easy to grow leeks from plug plants – just follow the instructional leaflet that will arrive with your plug plants. In the kitchen: Courgettes are a wonderfully versatile vegetable – they can be used in stir-fries, soups, casseroles, salads, pasta dishes, pickled, the list goes on. Planting advice: You may find multiple seedlings per plug – you can thin these out by pinching off excess seedlings.

Sending plants by post may cause them a little stress, so unpack them immediately and if dry, stand them for a few minutes in about 2 ½cm/1in of water, until the compost is fully moist again. It’s easy to grow (easier than many other brassicas) and will provide you with leaves for several months.
