This particular product will split people down the middle, due to the fact that because it's a UK release it has to be cut to comply with BBFC rules on animal cruelty. Luca Giorgio Barbareschi and Francesca Ciardi, two inexperienced students from the Actors Studio in New York City, were cast as Mark Tomaso and Faye Daniels, respectively, in part because they were native Italian speakers who also spoke English. Of course, in the age of the internet, both sides are catered for, in that this title is widely available in its uncut form from other countries. Filmed on a shoe string budget with virtually no production values evident, ‘Cannibal Holocaust' has a disturbing realistic grittiness that is almost unparalleled by any other movie and a huge influence for ‘The Blair Witch Project' almost twenty years later.

I had a fairly good idea of what to expect from it, as I was familiar with Umberto Lenzi's "Cannibal Ferox", which I suspected was quite similar (something I suspected correctly).The courts believed that the actors who portrayed the missing film crew and the native actress featured in the impalement scene were killed for the camera.

However, the scenes do not breach the terms of BBFC policy, itself based on theCinematograph Films (Animals) Act 1937. Deodato was proud of other aspects of the cinematography, namely the numerous moving shots using a standard, shoulder-mounted camera, foregoing the use of a steadicam. Undoubtedly the novel filming methods (after the deliberately slow pacing of the initial set-up, the latter half of the movie becomes a mock documentary as in THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, and just as horrifying) make it the best of its bunch and the most effective of them all.

Though the graphic violence can be hard for most to stomach, the most disturbing aspect of the film is what Deodato is saying about modern society.
