About this deal

To help narrow the field, you must first weigh your personal preferences for taste and caffeine content. It mimics a classic design (though doesn’t have the same finesse as the Bodum model) and creates a decent cup of coffee – no complaints there. If coffee is not your drink of choice, the Zyliss hot mug can also be used for other hot drinks such as hot chocolate and tea.

In addition, its fine-mesh stainless steel filter effectively traps fine grounds for smooth results, helping you to deliver the perfect cup of coffee. If a smaller cafetiere brews a 125ml cup of coffee, that leaves enough room for milk or cream in a six-ounce cup.

Plus, the dome-shaped lid – which reminds us of one of those old-fashioned ring-for-service desk bells – slots in place tightly, too.

There wasn’t as much ‘coffee bloom’ as other models though, and stoneware doesn’t match up to metal in terms of heat retention.

Whether you are passionate about perfecting a Flat White, Cortado or a soothing herbal blend or decadent hot chocolate, our experts are here for you. It’s a coffee maker that’s designed to be on display – especially for coffee drinkers who prefer modern décor.

Le Creuset cafetières come with a 10-year warranty (most manufacturers aren’t that generous) and when we tested it, the resulting coffee was piping-hot and smooth-textured.

A cafetière also puts you in control, allowing you to make your coffee as strong or weak as you like. With a one-litre capacity, this cafetière is ideal for a dinner party and it looks substantial, with a wide lid and jug. This is one of the most important things of using a cafetière – if you don’t plunge within 4 minutes the coffee may be over-brewed and bitter, and before 4 minutes, you won’t get all the complex flavours the coffee has to offer. Once you’ve spooned in your ground coffee and added not-quite-boiling water, you leave it for about four minutes before gently pushing the plunger to the bottom. Sometimes known as a French press, cafetières offer a good middle ground (pun intended) between instant coffee and coffee machines.

It has an argon-welded spout, smaller than your average cafetière spout, and it’s this feature that made it a joy to use. With 15 different colours to choose from, including classic ‘volcanic orange’, it’s great fun choosing a Le Creuset cafetière to compliment your kitchen. Some cafetières (though none on our shortlist) have measuring lines, but if yours doesn’t, it’s pretty easy to guess how much is in there if you know its capacity. It also left us with a creamy layer of ‘coffee bloom’ on top of the liquid’s surface – the most bloom, in fact, of all the cafetières we tested. Because the grounds are immersed, the cafetiere extracts a great deal of flavour from the ground coffee beans, which is then transferred to the liquid after it is filtered. This ProCook cafetière is double walled, so the coffee inside stays hot while the exterior remains cool. The stainless steel plunger fits snugly into the carafe, making for a velvety cup of coffee with plenty of ‘coffee bloom’ on top (those frothy surface bubbles that you get on a decent cup of coffee). Made from heat-resistant glass, this snazzy cafetière is noticeably lightweight and enjoyable to use. Unlike traditional grounds, cafetiere grounds should be closer to the consistency of rough sand than of powder.
