You’re on the small island of Islay and, due to the use of peat as a primary fuel source, your typical flavour profile is pungent smoke and salinity from maritime, salty-sea air. Deriving from the Gaelic for ‘mouth of the river’, Bunnahabhain was founded in 1881 by William Robertson and brothers James and William Greenless. I was anticipating everything I love about the standard 46% 12 year old but amped up to 11: the toffee/caramel, dried fruits, sea saltiness, light fruits, all enveloped by that lovely sherried surround. The 2021 release for me was a bit more gentle and slightly sweeter; there were more notes of caramel, vanilla and honeyed almonds. You don’t have to go to Campbeltown for industrial notes and funk, nor Speyside for soft fruits and delicate whiskies.There are not many contemporary releases worth chasing, but this cask strength Bunnahabhain is a notable exception. Included in this deal was the popular blend Black Bottle, whose contents feature a quantity of spirit from every distillery on Islay. In 2022, a total of 383 bottles were independently released by Murray McDavid for the Benchmark collection. g. The rich arrival is bursting with dark fruits, toffee and cocoa, while nutmeg, mint and hints of salt develop mid-palate. Some really great casks have been used here; I get similar notes to an older vintage glendronach 18 I have open. and retained a full spectrum of flavours which have been developed from the sherry casks during maturation.
