Partnering with his brother-in-law, businessman Laurence Emmett, the pair founded Format Games and are set to launch two new games this year: colour-mixing card game, Egg Slam, and the immensely replayable trivia game, So Wrong It’s Right. Without playing it many more times, it's unclear how much this simple formula will keep your interest in the long term. Also, through people knowing my personality because of the radio or having played my previous games, they trust that I like board games and I know what I’m doing.
Seeing the potential of Matt’s designs, and recognising the worldwide appeal of the game formats, August saw Asmodee follow this up with an exclusive global distribution deal covering the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Television and Sony Award-nominated radio presenter Matt Edmondson established himself as a board game inventor when he created the party game Obama Llama. We really liked them, they said they could distribute the games in the UK for us and then we asked if we could also speak to their US office. Asmodee signed as the UK distributor for Format Games back in February, and in August the firm expanded the deal to cover the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. It’s difficult to say how long this novel formula will last when compared to other more complex games.I’ve played strategy games that have clever mathematics underpinning them, and I could never come up with one of those. Matt Edmondson first entered the game space as the inventor of Big Potato’s Obama Llama, and last year he self-published Ansagrams. We sent our Pocket Ansagrams to the gym over the winter months and it’s come back bulked up ready for the party season. With 1100 new questions, 220 playing cards and additional components such as pads and pencils, our new Ansagrams is a brand new family sized version of our favourite word game trivia mash-up!
Whilst this may be true for some, I’d recommend learning by doing and having the first round be a trial round.
It means the licensed versions of Dobble, like Dobble Gruffalo, give you the best of both worlds; you get a fantastic game mechanic while introducing people to Julia Donaldson, or you’re introducing Gruffalo fans to a new fantastic game like Dobble.

Whilst there are many cards you can play through before you see the same one again, the game lacks the almost infinite randomness that other word games like Scrabble and Bananagrams have.
I’m excited to see people of all ages discover the wealth of different play experiences that Format Games has on offer and am thrilled that Asmodee has picked us up at such an early stage of our life! Matt Edmondson added: “Lockdown gave me the perfect opportunity to explore my potential even further as a games designer – I was finding inspiration everywhere, but particularly during the extra quality play-time I had with my young daughter, Ivy. We got 3,000 of them made, and I assumed we’d be selling them over a three-year period in dribs and drabs. Matt came out of lockdown with a raft of game ideas, ready to bring to market and – thanks to last year’s success with Ansagrams – Asmodee could see the potential of our whole portfolio.
