About this deal

Even if you understand the relationship between labels, distributors, and retail, for example, you don't really "get it" until you experience the process from the inside rather than experiencing it as a fan. For more than thirty years, All You Need to Know About the Music Business has been universally regarded as the definitive guide to the music industry. If you don't work to leverage those reviews into something else, they'll just be a minor blip on the screen. There are practicalities, financial and otherwise, in the music business that are simply not apparent until you actually have to, say, make sure the CD run is on schedule and the review is really going to be published when promised.

Just because you can list 25 bands that were discovered on Facebook does not mean you should expect it to happen to you, and just because band XYZ ended up being profiled on TV for their off-kilter ad doesn't mean you can repeat their plan with the same result. Some musicians really like taking care of the business side of their careers, and they really have a knack for it.At a time when no one really knows what’s next, or even if the giant labels will survive, Passman offers authoritative wisdom to keep you focused and make sure your career is on-track. Don has lectured extensively on the music industry, including at Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, USC Gould School of Law, UCLA School of Law, the Los Angeles Copyright Society, and the Beverly Hills Bar Association. Considered the industry bible by the Los Angeles Times, All You Need to Know About the Music Business: Ninth Edition is a gem of a book by the music lawyer Donald Passman. Are there any areas of digital music you would recommend artists look into now because they are potentially more lucrative than others? The book lays out a clear path of steps to take if you want to build up a following and earn royalties from getting your tracks into television and film.

Joel Cummins, keyboardist/vocalist for Umphrey McGee, speaks from experience here, clearly communicating the avoidable traps and setbacks that rookie artists tend to fall into, all while inspiring ideas and driving the point home at the end of each chapter with relevant interviews with stars like Huey Lewis and Susan Tedeschi. The book contains a lot of interesting chapters including protecting your name and music, sampling legally, avoiding legal issues, and how to collaborate with other musicians. You will also learn about the new age hurdles people face while publishing and how to approach them. This book is her way of presenting her knowledge and ultimately helping out new music entrepreneurs. And they also don’t care how many times they are told “No,” or how many obstacles are put in front of them; they just keep moving. The funny thing is, it’s not about talent, because I’ve known some incredibly talented people that have had only moderate careers or no careers at all.
