Maybe this wouldn’t have been quite such an irritation to me if the main part of the story would have kicked in a little earlier and been a bit more believable.

We all know how important self care is, which is why WILDWOMAN makes such an interesting book subscription box. I wonder if, given editing time, Ibbotson would have smoothed over this rough anger and written more of a story than a screed. It’s clear that before he takes you to Everest, he wants you to know the technical difficulties that are going to arise. Simmons spent hundreds of pages convincing me that Mount Everest was one of the most extreme and lethal places on earth.our heroes, in fact, are among the forefront of mountaineering tech with their fancy bottled air and their 12 point crampons. A young Brit named Percival Bromley, unattached to the 1924 British Everest Expedition, just so happened to have vanished on Mount Everest at the same time as Mallory and Irvine. Honestly, I finished the book before the kids and I read it together, just so I could see what happened next.

Hannah vividly demonstrates how the Nazis, through starvation, intimidation and barbarity both casual and calculated, demoralized the French, engineering a community collapse that enabled the deportations and deaths of more than 70,000 Jews. This tale about a family of yetis was a fun read, although I wouldn't have known it was an Eva Ibbotson story if her name wasn't on the cover. On the other side of their valley, the Evil Materialistic Humans build an ostentatiously ornate resort.

I am not pro-hunting by any means but the sheer volume of detail with describing heads, skins, and violence towards animals was troubling for my sensitive kid and unnecessary. It is ostensibly a historical novel, after all, and back in 1925, there are some interesting cameos. The Abominable" continues in this vein with a fictionalized account of the race to climb Mount Everest in 1925. A few years ago I was approached by a small film company about possibly producing an animated version of The Abominable Charles Christopher. This is never explained, and the kidnapping of a young girl just so she could be a surrogate mother to baby yetis is more of a tee-hee-hee thing than a problematic situation.Ibbotson has written numerous books including The Secret of Platform 13, Journey to the River Sea, Which Witch? Unfortunately a troublesome read, with themes of imperialism and the white man’s burden and surprisingly published in 2013! THE ABOMINABLES was completed by Ibbotson's son and editor, but there is no noticeable difference from Ibbotson's usual voice.

My favourite character was Lady Agatha because she took the Yeti's in just like her own children and was a kind and gentle woman from a baby to elderly. Deep in Tibet and high on Everest, the three climbers -- joined by the missing boy's female cousin -- find themselves being pursued through the night by someone, or something. I am so pleased that this final work of hers was able to be completed (by Ibbotson's son, who does a beautiful job of capturing his late mother's literary voice and keeping to the spirit of her storytelling) and published for the enjoyment of her fans. Ibbotson has a beautiful way of writing and of telling stories and that comes through in spades with this book, which is marvelously supported and brought to life by Rentta's illustrations.

Everest and other major characters (including the two who-shall-not-be-named) - North Col, First Step, Second Step, interchangeable Sherpas, etc. At this point in the book--so very early on--all I could think was "White Man's Burden" which is not a theme I want to find in a book published in 2013.
