About this deal

Theo claims to have killed his nephew out of jealousy and anger after learning that Daniel and Carla had a sexual relationship. The police tell her that he was stabbed to death sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning. Both feature a small group of people with a tangled past, the loss of a child or the inability to have a child, an alcoholic character (Rachel and Angela. Because of her proximity, Irene observed secret interactions between Angela, Theo, and Carla, and suspects that there are nefarious elements in the family.

When he brings his find to the new head, it turns out she has a story of her own to tell, one of a brother who vanished years ago and of murder and ambition. The book asks the question, if you were offered the chance to right some terrible wrong that had been done to you, how far would you go? Read by the actor Rosamund Pike, it is set in the aftermath of a brutal stabbing and is told from multiple points of view. A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy.I may be biased as I was expecting a book as extraordinary as ‘The Girl on the Train’ so therefore I left feeling mildly underwhelmed and wanting a hair more. I loved the way you turned everything on its head, playing with our sympathies and empathies and all that business. Not only is every character in Hawkins’s novel vile, self-serving, and narcissistic, even worse, they’re dull. On the night Daniel died, she went to his boat and found a notebook with drawings of her, which she took.

It’s clearly a case of murder, so for the police it’s now simply a case of identifying who had both the opportunity and the motive. A series of vignettes introduce numerous characters—Irene, Deidre, Laura, Miriam, Daniel (dead), Carla, Theo, Angela (dead)—all of whom live or lived in a very small geographical area and have overlapping connections and reasons to be furious at each other. That these easter eggs are meaningless and even befuddling to new readers might make sense in terms of costs and benefits. From the beginning of the novel, I expected something big, earth shattering, surprising will happen or something so smart will come out to fool me but none of them happened. Miriam is a middle aged woman, living just several boats down from the boat where Daniel is brutally murdered. I’ll be interested to see what others think of it: I expect some will absolutely love it though others might feel as I do, that it rather passed them by. Miriam also wants to hurt Theo Myerson, a well-known novelist, and Daniel’s uncle: Decades earlier, Miriam and her friend Lorraine were abducted while hitchhiking as teenagers.

The narrative also includes excerpts that I think are supposed to be from Theo’s book, which is based on Miriam’s real experience. When you login first time using a Social Login button, we collect your account public profile information shared by Social Login provider, based on your privacy settings. He thinks she’s been sending him letters, accusing him of stealing her manuscript, but then he realizes the letters are from Jeremy, the man who abducted Miriam and her friend Lorraine.
