About this deal

While there’s an aspect of the hyper-real to the appearance of the Ultra Smooth Motion setting, it’s slick rather than distracting, coping with the slow pans of the camera in Taxi Driver without eliciting stutter and handling the faster pans well. Considering it's one of Hisense’s top-end TVs, there's no getting around the fact that the 55U7QFTUK is a disappointment. This dynamic metadata carries scene-by-scene (or frame-by-frame) instructions from content creators on how a TV should present the images to improve everything from brightness to contrast, detailing and colour reproduction. With LCD screens this is done by CCFL (cold-cathode fluorescent lamp) and LED makes use of LED lights.

The VIDAA system is intuitive to use and runs at a decent speed from button press to app opening and playing, plus there is Netflix, Prime Video and YouTube in 4K HDR. In short, while film buffs and premium TV addicts will likely struggle with the Hisense's performance, those who live on a televisual diet consisting mostly of live and catch-up TV may find far less to complain about. It did go slightly higher than this at 25 and 50% window sizes before rounding off at 551 nits on a full field. While the Hisense A7GQ is compatible with HDR10, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Vision flavours of HDR, it is not really bright enough to really display HDR at its best. The solid, tidy and full-featured remote control is well-appointed and features a handful of shortcut buttons to the main video services.

Hisense A7G review: an affordable 50-inch QLED TV | T3

A contrast ratio of for example 400:1 means that the blackest black on screen is 400 times darker than the whitest white. As you can see, in the most accurate picture mode for D65 white, which is HDR Night, the A7G is only capable of 250 nits brightness with all window sizes. Its trio of HDMIs do, though, unexpectedly handle variable refresh rates (up to 60Hz) and non HDR 1080p at 120Hz – despite the screen only using a 60Hz panel. There’s no local dimming to go with the direct backlighting, though, and worryingly the set uses an IPS-style LCD panel rather than a VA one. It’s a case of déjà vu with the A7G, which looks exactly like the U7Q – good in some ways, not so good in others.

The warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, and Hisense will repair or replace the TV if any issues arise during the warranty period. Hisense has been making inroads in the UK market with its affordable and feature laden TVs over the past few years, and its latest range is its most ambitious set. It will playback HDR content, but it does so with limited dynamic range in terms of image brightness, but the wide colour performance is good.

This was supposed to be the official TV of the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament which has sadly been moved to next year due to COVID 19, so the packaging of the TV is covered in Euro logos.
