The patent for this was granted to Ulysses DeMoulin on May 4, 1909 and can be viewed in full on the patents section of Google (see patents 654,611 and 920,837). In the abstract for the original application the device was described as follows: This is in a picture agency's library but I have not been able to find out where it originally came from or what it is precisely. Controller– We got one of the newer machines that comes with this cool little controller. I was also able to figure out how the controller works pretty easily. It has three different working modes. Electricity– As it comes from Spain, the electrical plug is natively the “Euro-plug”, but it comes with electrical adapters to plug into our US standard plug. The first one lasted a year before the metal broke, but the new version was 20% stronger. But for the most part, most implements can't be used hard enough. The canes are the best ones to use, along with a thin bamboo paddle. Any heavier paddle drags down the machine, and straps and belts don't work properly with it. It's still better than nothing, but a stronger machine is needed to get to the severity desired.
