I also dipped into 16-bit Sega games with the Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Classics collection on Steam. Frustratingly, this collection gave me the most awkward experience with the gamepads. The menu system of the collection didn't respond to any gamepad inputs in DirectInput or X-Input mode, except for the controller mapping function. I could still set the gamepads to work the way I wanted them to, but I couldn't use them to select games or navigate any menus in the collection's interface.
