About this deal

There are more than 2,000 types of salmonella, and salmonella infantis is regarded as being among the most virulent, frequently causing illness in humans and spreading rapidly on farms. The strain has become well established in parts of the EU poultry industry but has rarely been found on UK farms. Treatment in severe cases is electrolyte replacement (to provide electrolytes, such as sodium, potassium and chloride ions, lost through vomiting and diarrhoea) and rehydration. Yes, especially in young children and the elderly. Most often, salmonellosis is characterized by nausea and vomiting within 8-48 hours of ingestion. Shortly thereafter, the patient will experience abdominal pain, cramps or diarrhea. The diarrhea may vary from a few loose stools to profuse watery stools or, rarely, dysentery (bloody stools). Patients may have moderate fevers (up to 102° F) and occasional chills. Incorporate or spread manure on crop rather than grazing land. Spread onto flat rather than hilly areas to minimize runoff and maximize drying and exposure to UV radiation. You should encourage your child to take plenty of fluids. The aim is to prevent dehydration. The fluid lost in their vomit and/or diarrhoea needs to be replaced.

Gastroenteritis - the infection that Salmonella most commonly causes - can be diagnosed based on symptoms. Food poisoning - of which Salmonella is one cause - is a possibility if you've eaten contaminated food or drunk contaminated water, or if you've recently travelled abroad. A few people who get a salmonella infection also get pain in their joints. You might hear a doctor call it reactive arthritis or Reiter’s syndrome. It can last several months or longer. This condition can also cause pain while peeing and itchy, stinging, or sore eyes.

What is the economic impact of Salmonella?

Different types of Salmonella bacteria - which are rare in developed countries, but more common in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa - can cause typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever, which have different symptoms. See the typhoid and paratyphoid fever leaflet for more information. When should I seek medical advice? Children Wash fruits and vegetables carefully, particularly if they are eaten raw. If possible, vegetables and fruits should be peeled. Most people with salmonellosis develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. More severe cases of salmonellosis may include a high fever, aches, headaches, lethargy, a rash, blood in the urine or stool, and in some cases may become fatal. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that approximately 450 persons in the United States die each year from acute salmonellosis. Some of the tests also revealed antibiotic-resistant infections, meaning treatment options for anyone becoming seriously ill could be reduced. Such “superbug” variants, known as multidrug-resistant salmonella infantis, have been linked to major food poisoning outbreaks including one in the US in which at least one person died.

Sanitize and disinfect equipment used between animals, including water or milk pails, feeders, nipple bottles and oral medication equipment. Maintain clean, dry pens and alleys. If a potty has to be used by your child, wear gloves when you handle it and sanitise the potty afterwards. Adults in high-risk groups should not clean any pet items or animal waste without wearing disposable gloves. Children age 5 and under should not be given such tasks. Salmonella infection is diagnosed when a laboratory testdetects Salmonella bacteria in a person’s stool (poop), body tissue, or fluids. How is infection treated? Salmonella germs (bacteria) may be found in the gut of many animals, including wild animals, farm animals and pets.Certain people are more likely to get a serious Salmonella infection. These people include children who are younger than 5, adults who are 65 and older, and people whose immune systems are weakened from certain medical conditions (such as diabetes, liver or kidney disease, and cancer) or their treatments. Salmonella Symptoms Past U.S. outbreaks of salmonellosis have been associated with meat products, poultry products, raw or undercooked eggs and dough, dairy products, fruits, leafy greens, raw sprouts, fresh vegetables, nut butters and spreads, pet foods and treats. Preventing Foodborne Illness at Home The burden of foodborne diseases is substantial: every year almost 1 in 10 people fall ill and 33 million of healthy life years are lost. Foodborne diseases can be severe, especially for young children. Diarrhoeal diseases are the most common illnesses resulting from unsafe food, 550 million people falling ill each year, including 220 million children under the age of 5 years. Salmonella is 1 of the 4 key global causes of diarrhoeal diseases.
