About this deal

In Thailand, the official season for mangoes runs from late March through July. Thai mangoes are nevertheless also available in other months. During the first few months of the year, mangoes are harvested in Chaiyapoom, Pijit, Phitsanulok and Udon. Around June, they are harvested in Chiangmai and Chiangrai. Towards the end of the year, mangoes are available for harvest in Prajuab, Nakornratsima and Chaiyapoom. The leading mango variety used for drying in Thailand is Nam Dok Mai. Retailers rarely buy directly from exporters in developing countries. One new development is the polarization of the retail sector into discounters and high-level segments. Until recently, naturally dried mangoes were offered primarily by high-end retail segments. In the past two years, however, dried mangoes are also offered by several large European discounters (such as ‘Simply Nature’ dried mangoes by ALDI and ‘Alesto’ dried mangoes and dried pineapples by Lidl). Use the services of your national export promotion agency and actively participate in the creation of export strategies.

Mango can be found year-round in grocery stores, health food stores, and occasionally even at farmers' markets. This tasty fruit is sweet with just a hint of tart. When slicing mangoes, it's important to watch out for the large, flat seed at the center, which can easily dull knives. And finally, the fruits are dried just enough to attain the chewiness that you desire, and the great mango flavor you savor bite after bite. In Burkina Faso, a large mango-drying sector developed in the late 1990s. The main production zone for mangoes covers Orodara, Banfora and Bobo-Dioulasso. According to the Association of Mango Producers of Burkina Faso, the country has almost 75 mango-drying facilities. These facilities employ more than 10,000 people, 91% of whom are women. Moisture content: For natural dried mangoes, the maximum moisture content is 15%. For dried mangoes treated with preservatives, the maximum moisture content is 35%.Search through the member list of the European Trade Federation for Dried Fruit and Edible Nuts (FRUCOM) to find buyers from different channels and segments.

The European Union has set maximum residue levels (MRLs) for pesticides in and on food products. Products containing more than the allowable amounts of pesticide residues will be withdrawn from the European market. The majority of European importers request detailed tests for the presence of a large number of pesticides (sometimes more than 500). The European Union regularly publishes a list of approved pesticides that are authorized for use in the European Union. This list is frequently updated. Microbiological contaminants It is estimated that Burkina Faso produces between 3,000 and 4,000 tonnes of dried mangoes each year. Most of the dried mangoes in that country are exported to Europe (around 3.5 thousand tonnes), with Germany and the Netherlands being main destination markets. Burkina Faso thus supplies around half of all dried mangoes in Europe. In addition to exports to Europe, Burkina Faso exported nearly 200 tonnes to the United States of America. The Philippines ranks among the leading global exporters of fresh and dried mangoes. It supplies about 10% of the world’s demand. The Philippines is home to seven million mango trees, and a large share of the harvest is processed by drying. Most dried-mango processors are based in Cebu. Dried mangoes are the most valuable mango export of the Philippines, and they account for around 77% of all processed exports.Consult the guidelines for imports of organic products into the European Union (PDF) to familiarize yourself with the requirements of European organic traders. The majority of European buyers will ask for Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) recognized certification. For dried mangoes, the most popular certification programmes (all recognized by GFSI) are as follows: The breakfast cereal industry is a large user of sugar-infused and candied mangoes. To meet the demand for low-sugar products, this industry is expected to make increasing use of dried mangoes infused with natural sweeteners (e.g. concentrated fruit juice) instead of dried mangoes sweetened with sugar syrup. Honey. These have a smaller seed than other types of mangoes, so their ratio of flesh to seed is higher. The quality of dried mangoes is determined by the allowed percentage of defective produce, by number or by weight. The industry has defined several criteria for quality, but some of them (such as taste and flavour) are subjective and cannot be easily determined according to physical characteristics.

During the two mango seasons, from January to February and from April to August, HPW produces 1,200 tonnes of dried Keitt and Kent mangoes. In general, the company’s largest markets are in the largest countries in Europe: the UK, Germany and Italy. One of the main issues regarding organic dried-mango sales is product quality. Organic dried mangoes are often of a darker colour and less soft than conventionally dried mangoes are. These characteristics depend primarily on the drying and processing technology. For this reason, suppliers are researching new processing technologies. They have already discovered high-quality organic dried mangoes that are very similar to conventionally produced dried mangoes in terms of taste and texture. It can be expected that improvements in the quality of organic dried mangoes will open an important field of competition in the next few years. Sustainability certification The food-processing segment accounts for roughly 20% of the European market for dried mangoes. This small percentage is explained by the relatively high prices of dried mangoes compared to most other dried fruit. The Trends section of this study describes several product launches and developments. The following are the most common users of dried mangoes: To be marketed as organic in Europe, dried mangoes must have been grown using organic production methods according to European legislation. Growing and processing facilities must be audited by an accredited certifier before you will be allowed to put the European Union’s organic logo on your products. The same applies to the logo of the standard holder (for example, the Soil Association in the United Kingdom, Naturland in Germany or Agriculture biologique in France). Visit leading European trade fairs regularly to meet competitors and potential customers. Examples include ANUGA, SIAL and Food Ingredients Europe. For organic products, visit Biofach, the world's largest trade fair for organic food and agriculture. It's best to keep mangoes at room temperature. They'll ripen this way, getting sweeter and softer. Don't refrigerate them before they ripen. You can speed up their ripening process by putting them in a paper bag. Dried mangoes do not require any special temperature during transport or storage. Extremely high or low temperatures should nevertheless be avoided. At high storage temperatures, fruit sugar particles may form on the surface of the product, thereby hardening and discolouring them. Labelling requirements Mexico is famous as an exporter of fresh mangoes. It produces several cultivars, including Haden, Tommy Atkins, Keitt, Kent, Manila and Ataulfo. Although several varieties are used for drying, Haden is the most popular, followed by Ataulfo. Mexican dried mangoes are famous for their high quality and they command very high export prices. Other varieties are more commonly exported fresh. The exporting industry is grouped under the Mexican mango exporters association, which focuses primarily on the export of fresh mangoes, although some members also engage in drying processing activities.
