Now, on the 40th anniversary of 'No Parlez', he’s releasing a remarkable new record and publishing his extraordinary memoir; both called 'Behind The Lens'. He comes to The Apex as part of his UK tour where he’ll meet fans, sing hits and tell stories about his incredible career. Before he knew it, Paul was surrounded by his idols. “Although you have famous names like Billy Preston and Tony Joe White, I also had top session players like the country guitarist Reggie Young, who played on Dobie Gray’s records, and The Memphis Horns, who had played with Otis Redding. Outside I was calm, but inside I was screaming!” I was in chains On his last album for Sony, Paul worked with Don Was on The Crossing. Shorn of much of what had made the Paul Young sound, especially on this first long-player without Pino Palladino involved, Paul recalls: “I was living my dream on that album. It didn’t start that way, but Don had a Filofax full of both famous names and top session players and he kept saying: ‘Why don’t we do this song with such-and-such and that song with somebody else?’” New Zealand album certifications – Paul Young – No Parlez". With poor record sales after the release of two albums and seven singles, Q-Tips broke up in early 1982 when Young signed a solo recording contract with CBS. Young briefly teamed up again with Q-Tips for a reunion tour in 1993. [8] Solo career and pop stardom [ edit ]

Young returned to the UK Top Ten with a version of Ann Peebles' " I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down". [7] The latter appeared on his second album, The Secret of Association, released in 1985, which secured his future success in the United States, Japan and Australia. The album went to No. 1 in the UK. That year, Young scored the biggest worldwide hit of his career with "Every Time You Go Away", a cover of a song from the 1980 Hall & Oates album Voices. "Every Time You Go Away" was his biggest success in the U.S. [20] Young's smooth yet soulful voice belongs to a genre known as " blue-eyed soul". At the 1985 Brit Awards, Young received the award for Best British Male. [21] Associated with the Second British Invasion of the US, [22] "Every Time You Go Away" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1985. It also won Best British Video at the 1986 Brit Awards. [23] In 1987 he went to studios in Milan to record his third album ‘Between Two Fires’ and met the Italian singer Zucchero. They became good friends, to collaborate later. An exasperated Paul continues: “So in Between Two Fires, I tried to create an album that these US stations would like. But they didn’t like it and neither did the Europeans! But I still think there are some good songs on there, such as War Games and Wasting My Time. It’s still got some great material on it.” With the second album, ‘The Secret Of Association’ his status as a world star was confirmed. ‘Every Time You Go Away’ hit number one in America in the summer of 1985, (shortly after his appearance at the historic Live Aid) and in any other unconquered countries too. It was and still is his biggest worldwide hit. Paul Young's Los Pacaminos riding into town" [ permanent dead link], Iomtoday.co.im; retrieved 28 January 2012. The solo career wasn’t looking initially like an immediate soaraway success, as his first two singles didn’t do the business.

During parts of 1987, Young toured extensively as the opening act for Genesis on their Invisible Touch Tour. Young played more than 35 dates in 13 countries. This tour concluded on July 1-4, 1987 with four sold out shows featuring more than 350,000 fans at Wembley Stadium (1923) in London. Also, Paul’s hobby of cooking turned into more of a career, and after appearing in high profile TV shows such as Celebrity Masterchef and Hell’s Kitchen, and six months as guest chef at a famous local restaurant, Paul released a cookbook, “On My Travels” in the summer of 2012. Through 1995-6 Paul also prepared new material with long time collaborator, singer-songwriter Drew Barfield and songwriters in Nashville, to assemble a collection of songs for the next album. Paul Antony Young [4] [5] (born 17 January 1956) [6] is an English musician, singer and songwriter. No Parlez is the debut solo studio album by English singer Paul Young. Released in 1983, it reached number one on the UK Albums Chart (for a non-consecutive total of 5 weeks) and remained in the UK Top 100 for 119 weeks. [4] The album has been certified quadruple platinum by the BPI for UK sales in excess of 1.2 million copies. [5] Also, around this time, Paul responded to the hiatus in his career by calling up friends and suggesting they get together in an informal group, simply for fun. The result was a loosely styled Tex-Mex band, Los Pacaminos. More of this comes later. It was after the release of Between Two Fires when Paul decided to take a break from the dizzying whirr of an international pop career and a fairly solid itinerary that had barely seen him enjoy a day off since 1982. He’d moved out to Los Angeles and married his longtime girlfriend, model Stacey Smith, in November 1987.Hits of the World – Italy – Top Pop Albums" (PDF). Billboard. 22 December 1984. p.TA–12 . Talking about The Congregation’s 1971 hit, Paul explains: “ Softly Whispering was one of those one-hit-wonder songs like Yesterday Has Gone by Cupid’s Inspiration and I’d always fancied trying it. I always earmarked every song I covered, although I was talked into Oh Girl by the record company. I’d originally thought it was a great song for a live encore, but a bit of a cop-out for a single.” Paul’s Tex-Mex troopers Los Pacaminos started out as a hobby band but have now been together for nearly three decades
