About this deal

Ven. Mahasi Sayadaw held Burma's highest scholastic honor, the title of Agga Mahapandita, awarded to him in 1952. During the Sixth Buddhist Council, held in Rangoon from 1954 to 1956, he performed the duties of Questioner (pucchaka), a role performed at the First Buddhist Council by the Venerable Mahakassapa. Ven. Mahasi

At other times he traveled throughout Burma. [1] Because of his knowledge of pariyatti (theory), he was able to write many books on Dhamma in both Pali and Burmese languages such as, Paramattha-dipani ( Manual of Ultimate Truth), Nirutta-dipani, a book on Pali grammar and The Manuals of Dhamma. At the same time he kept alive the pure tradition of patipatti (practice) by teaching the technique of Vipassana to a few people. We seek a deep, clear, precise awareness of the mind and body. Mental objects seem to present a bewildering diversity, but actually they fall into just a few clear categories, such as “thinking,” “imagining,” “remembering,” “planning” and “visualizing.” Gallo, F. Overcoming of the five hindrances features in early Buddhist soteriology as an indispensable requirement for being able to cultivate mental tranquility as well as liberating insight. According to two Pāli discourses, the Buddha explained the effect of the five hindrances on the mind to a brahmin who was puzzled at the fact that at times he would forget what he had memorized repeatedly and at other times he would remember what he had not repeatedly memorized (SN 46.55 and AN 5.193; see also Anālayo 2013, pp. 189–191). The vivid similes employed in these discourses to illustrate the effect of these five hindrances are also extant in a Sanskrit fragment (Tripāṭhī 1995, p. 127). The brahmin’s difficulties in memorization, a key aspect of learning in the ancient Indian setting, suggest that the relevance of the five hindrances extends beyond meditation practice and could be of considerable interest to education in general (Anālayo 2022). You will become aware of certain sensations as you breathe in and the abdomen rises, and as you breathe out and the abdomen falls. Developing Attention A Manual of Light and The Manual of the Path to Higher Knowledge: Two Expositions of the Buddha’s Teaching

To support a precise awareness, we separate the movements clearly, making a soft mental label at the beginning of each movement, and making sure that our awareness follows it clearly and powerfully until it ends. One minor but important point is to begin noting the placing movement at the instant that the foot begins to move downward. To achieve peace of mind, we must make sure our body is at peace. So it’s important to choose a position that will be comfortable for a long period of time. The Breath During Meditation After the wait period, the controls received EFT. In a within-subjects longitudinal analysis, 60% no longer met PTSD criteria after three sessions, which increased to 86% after six sessions for the 49 subjects who received EFT. Benefits remained at 86% at 3 months and at 80% at 6 months. Sebastian and Nelms ( 2017) conducted a meta-analysis of seven randomized controlled trials comparing EFT treatment to usual care or waitlist. The authors found a large treatment effect with a weighted Cohen’s d = 2.96 (95% CI: 1.96–3.97, p< 0.001). They concluded that EFT is effective for the treatment of PTSD with a variety of populations.

During Practice

In 1900, Sayadaw gave up control of the monastery and pursued more focused meditation in the mountain caves near the banks of the Chindwin River. Vipassana, or insight meditation, is the practice of continued close attention to sensation, through which one ultimately sees the true nature of existence. It is believed to be the form of meditation practice taught by the Buddha himself, and although the specific form of the practice may vary, it is the basis of all traditions of Buddhist meditation.
