Pericles is a strong main character. He has strengths and weaknesses, but is a good man determined to prove his worth. He has a strong legacy to live up to due to his father’s actions but fighting is in his blood. Even after an opportunity to settle down to married life, he can’t resist the call to stand by his friends against impossible odds. Awards of Conn Iggulden The battles are set far from home this time. While this is by no means a ‘light’ story, it’s also not as dark as the previous two. Not witnessing the heartbreak of seeing your home, your city, fall to invaders knowing it’s going to be impossible to keep them out, changes the tone. The Athenians are taking the fight to them, and it changes the mood. There’s an undercurrent of hope and determination, rather than the helplessness prevalent beforehand.

The Lion is a historically based fictional story about Pericles the leader of Athens during the height of the Peloponnesian war and one of the most intriguing figures of antiquity. That brings me to my other big problem with this book. I'm fairly sure it was written originally as two stories and glued together because they weren't long enough. Storytelling is excellent, and where Christian Cameron excel in describing famous battles and picturing these landmarks, Conn Iggulden excels in describing human emotions interwoven with great dialogue, so that all characters come vividly to life within this amazing story. This will be an enjoyable read for anyone with an interest in history, military strategy, and the ancient world! To write as authentic descriptions as possible, Iggulden spent his school breaks researching in Rome and Pompeii trying to immerse himself in the history he was writing about. To that end, he donned battle Armor and sailed on the open seas in much the same way his characters did.I liked it because it is nicely written in a style that only Conn Iggulden can employ. So, for some, especially if you are not passionate about history, Greek wars, battle description etc., you might find it a bit boring and long. To me, it sets the scene for what is coming, and it helps the main character (Pericles) grow for an in-depth re-creation of who this man was and what he did to remain a hero in Greek history. There are a total of 5 books under this series. The Gates of Romerelates the story of two young boys, Gaius and Marcus, as they grow to adulthood during the last years of the Roman Republic, a period of great political turmoil, chaos, and violence. In 2017, Conn Iggulden released the first book in his first fiction fantasy series, Darien: Empire of Salt. [14] This series is being published under the pen name C.F. Iggulden to avoid confusion with Iggulden's historical fiction novels. [ citation needed] The second book in the series, Shiang, was released on 2018 followed by The Sword Saint in 2019.
