Hordes are the cheap, mob type troops like lesser Goblins, or rioting peasants, whose weak skills are made up for by seemingly endless numbers. When a Horde is destroyed, a new Horde element can be brought on from your table edge. One turn represents 15 minutes. Can be used with 25mm, 15mm, or 6mm figures. Basing The width of the base depends upon the size of Space Crusade - Lead a Space Marine chapter across the galaxy against the forces of Chaos in this mini-campaign for HOTT Meanwhile Veganin has set off on his own quest to slay the leaders of the evil hordes, beginning with the High Bishop of Zylbor, whose priests baptise people by holding their heads under water until they stop struggling. What Veganin doesn't realise, until it is seemingly too late, is that the Bishop's gaze will turn anything it falls upon to ashes. A lot of games define troops according to their training, equipment and morale. HoTT defines them by their battlefield role. For example, a unit of Shooters is missile infantry. It works the same way whether it’s made of Hobbits with slings, Martians with radium rifles, or City Guard with crossbows.Geoff fielded a Greek force with spears, some chariot riders, a few warband, Achilles and his Myrmidons as a hero general, plus a couple of Titan behemoths and Ares as a god. A unit can only move if activated with a PIP. The movement rate depends on the troop type and terrain. Light troops move faster through rough ground then heavy troops. Mounted troops move faster than infantry, when in the clear. Aerial units ignore terrain.

DBA (De bellis antiquitatis) and HOTT (Hordes of the Things), along with DBM (De bellis multitudinis) and DBR (De bellis renationis) are part of a family of rules for wargaming with miniatures published by WRG in England. They all having similar mechanisms but cover different periods or using different scales. Another rule set to take the system beyond 1700 AD is in preparation. DBM (and now DBMM) and DBR are intended for large games with plenty of figures on the table. DBA and HOTT are intended for small games with limited numbers of figures. Here we are concerned with just DBA and HOTT. The rule sets are briefly described below and links are given to variants and files. One Hour Wargames - Great Northern War - A heavily modified version of the Horse & Musket/Pike & Shot rules in Neil Thomas's 'One Hour Wargames' specifically for use with the Great Northern War (Version 1.0, 21st August 2015). Simple fantasy rules for epic fantasy battles, including a variety of basic unit types (gods, magicians, heroes, lurkers, and so forth). Point cost system allows players to invent their own armies. Rulebook also includes campaign system, and a number of pre-generated armies. Each element costs between 1 and 6 points. More powerful elements are more expensive, of course. The standard size game is 24 points, which usually will be about 10 or 12 elements. Only half your points can be spent on super units like Heroes, Gods and monsters, ensuring a good battlefield role for normal troops. Lurkers—Creatures that hide in dark places; water lurkers are a specialised version that live in aquatic terrain

The Army Lists

Hordes of the Things is a sitcom, acting as a parody of J. R. R. Tolkien's classic fantasy series Lord of the Rings. This radio series was written by Andrew Marshall (as A. P. R. Marshall) and John Lloyd (as J. H. W. Lloyd). The design objective is to make it possible to fight the kinds of battles seen in fantasy fiction and films like Lord of the Rings, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, and similar wars. These are essentially based on historical mediaeval combat with added elements of mighty heroes, monsters and magic. See The Elephant- American Civil war battles on a chessboard or square grid. (Version 1.1 7th January 2015) Any scale of figures can be used, providing the dimensions of the element bases are consistent. If using 15mm figures, an area of 24 inches square is recommended, and 36 inches for 28mm figures. DBA Extension Scenarios - Napoleonic and Seven Years War Scenarios by Bruce McFarlane of the Canadian Wargamers Group.

A Hotter Fire - Rules for American Civil War naval actions. These were written a long time ago, and have provided some fun games over the years. Whilst the mechanics are simple and require a minimal amount of technical data about individual ships (and for may there's not a lot of information), they do allow the quirkiness of some of the vessels to be recreated. DBAWI - Variant of the HWS DBA Extension, specifically for the American War of Independence, by Chris Johnson. Includes scenarios. Each element is basically a regiment of troops, a gigantic monster like a dragon, or a small group of powerful beings -- a hero and his retinue, say. An element can move and fight as a unit by itself, or it can combine with other elements into larger units. Mounted troops can be Heroes, Paladins, Knights, Riders, Behemoths, or Beasts. These move faster in good going than Foot.PIPs are also used to summon Gods, to bring on replacement Horde units, and to free Heroes and Magicians from being ensorcelled. WRG are a well respected miniature game company in the UK, having developed the hugely popular Ancients in the 70s to 80s, and the De Bellis Antiquitatis rules in the 90s. HoTT is based on the DBA rules. It is a generic system which can be applied in many different fantasy settings. HOTT is essentially the fantasy variant of DBA. Sample army lists and a campaign system are also in the rule book.
