The most useful scanned text, of course, is editable in programs like Microsoft Word or Google Docs, and since the computer and software must work much harder to convert imaged text to searchable text, the process often takes longer. Depending on your PC and the optical character recognition (OCR) software you're using, times vary. However, with today's blazing computers and efficient operating systems and software, OCR seldom takes nearly as long as it did just a few years ago. The only control on the machine is a single, illuminated scan button, which works in collaboration with the custom-written ScanSnap software. This includes a setup program to select simplex or duplex scanning and define the scan resolution and output file type, as well as an organiser, which works quite like Nuance PaperPort.
