My house is burnin’ up to the sky / I thought it might rain but the clouds passed by / Sorrow and pity rule the earth and the skies / I’m not lookin’ for nothin’ in anyone’s eyes.” All of these live versions are previously unreleased, apart from the 1998 recording of ‘Make You Feel My Love’ from L.A, which was on the ‘Things Have Changed’ maxi-single. CD 5 is made up of songs that have previously been available on The Bootleg Series Vol. 8: Tell Tale Signs, but it’s nice to have it as part of the box set for continuity and completist reasons. The album features seminal recordings from the artist’s coffeehouse era (Gerde’s Folk City, 1962), his mythic 1963 breakout concerts at New York’s Town Hall and Carnegie Hall, a duet with Joan Baez from the historic March on Washington (August 28, 1963), definitive performances from his European and world tours of 1965 and 1966, incandescent moments from the 1964 and 1965 Newport Folk Festivals and more. Premessa: sono un fan di Bob Dylan da decenni e come sempre ho acquistato a scatola chiusa la versione più ricca (5CD - Deluxe Box-Set).

Fragments’ Bears Witness to Bob Dylan’s Late ALBUM REVIEW: ‘Fragments’ Bears Witness to Bob Dylan’s Late

In early 1996, Dylan, who had not released an album of original compositions since the 1990 LP Under The Red Sky, began working on new songs. From August to October, he went to Teatro Studio in Oxnard/CA with Daniel Lanois, who had produced his 1989 album Oh Mercy, to record demos for a possible new LP Dutchcharts.nl – Bob Dylan – The Bootleg Series Vol. 17 - Fragments - Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997)" (in Dutch). Hung Medien. Retrieved February 4, 2023.

Bob Dylan is my favourite recording artist and Daniel Lanois has produced some of my favourite albums, but Time Out Of Mind was never my Bob Dylan favourite album, despite having some great new (in 1997) writing on it. I felt that his voice, which was at one of it's least easy on the ears stages in the mid-1990s, was being propped up, or glossed over, by the production. The 5CD Fragments contains a new remix of the entire album which presents Time Out Of Mind with a more 'natural' sound. It still sounds like a Lanois production but some of the more processed sounds are reduced to give a more 'live in the studio' feel. Personally speaking, this is definitely now my preferred version. Disc 4 contains live versions from the years 1998-2001 - I love live Dylan but for this period, I'm primarily interested in studio recordings, but the sound quality of these recordings seems underwhelming on first listen. I don't know if they're entirely audience recordings or a combination of sources but I would have far preferred professionally recorded versions. Der Remix hebt das alles wieder auf. Man vergleiche einfach mal Standing In The Doorway in beiden Abmischungen, um den Unterschied deutlich zu hören. There are unsuccessful experiments here too in the name of super-fan pleasing completion – a few unconvincing stabs at “Mississippi” (which Dylan would subsequently nail on 2001’s Love & Theft) seem unnecessary. Much more compellingly, there is stunning warm-up rendition of traditional ballad “Water Is Wide”, whilst a selection of thoroughly fired-up, often radically rearranged live takes of Time Out of Mind songs recorded between 1998 and 2001 makes a compelling case for a release focusing on Dylan’s potent live shows from this era.

never miss a release.
