About this deal

The Derwent Chromaflow are one such pencil that are aimed toward those of use who just love drawing, adult colouring book artists, crafters, people like myself who love to use colored pencils and then slip the work into a wallet never to see the light of day again. Derwent Chromaflow Price We use different woods in the manufacture of our pencils and sometimes the wood may change during the lifetime of a pencil range. Chromaflow is made using fine grade pine which is perfect for the slightly slimmer barrel of the Chromaflow pencils. The Drawing and Lightfast ranges are 100% lightfast and therefore perfect if you are selling your original works. These are considered professional quality pencils and they are all of lightfast level of either LF1 or LF2. This, therefore, means that they are considered fully compliant with the ASTM 6901 and Blue Wool Scale ISO 105 standards. A summary of the three pencil ranges I use I would strongly recommend doing tests on different paper swatches before you try a full piece with any new pencil. The combination of the type of paper you use with any coloured pencil product can greatly affect your success with it. Often it takes a bit of time to find the right combination of paper and pencil with the techniques you like using to get successful results. As you can see from the Chromaflow, right from the get go, the very first light layer, the pigment strength is tremendous. I always apply 5 layers as it is generally considered a good idea to apply at least 5 layers before using Odourless Mineral Spirits. The final column is a single heavy and the paper used for this test was the Hahnemühle Agave Watercolor paper, this paper has a nice texture to it, 70% Agave and 30% Cotton.

How do Chromaflow pencils compare to colour pencils in Derwent’s Professional Quality range; Coloursoft, Procolour, Lightfast? Derwent Chromaflow are 60% lightfast across 72 colours, LF – Lightfastness rating (6 – Good, 7 – Very Good, 8 – Excellent)The photo above is of the broken tip of the pencil after using a normal-moderate amount of pressure to colour out this swatch. This was my first pencil-to-paper experience and the tip promptly broke. My later usage of the product for my demo drawing was better but I did have sizable chunks of leads break 3 more times including on this same pencil. As you can see from the images provided, there were a few serious issues with barrels whilst sharpening. Again being completely 100% honest, on some pencils I would use my M&R hand held sharpener which is razor sharp and if I experienced issues using the handheld, I would use my Caran d’Ache hand crank sharpener and most of the times this would smooth out the issue. You will note the very strong colours involved and the high pigmentation. Most colours show up much stronger after the addition of water. The first column of the chart shows the colours in their dry state. The second shows the addition of water, first in concentration and then as a sweep of a small amount of the wet colour off into a paler, less concentrated form. I suggest you do your own chart showing the colours both in their dry state and also after wetting. The darker colours come up very strong and only show differences when well diluted. I strongly advise that the first time you use them, you test the pencils and paper out first, and keep your pigment strength low on the paper until you are used to them. They probably have the highest colour strength of any aquarelle pencils. It should be noted that this set includes a white pencil as one of its 12. Derwent is the maker of my all-time favourite super opaque white pencil in their Derwent Drawing line. The Chromaflow pencil, however, does not offer the same or even similar qualities. I used it in some areas as a burnish blender or to lighten up some of the areas and I didn’t feel like it really added any additional value. Derwent is one of the few companies that I feel has been smart about giving artists another colour instead of a white pencil in a 12 set but in this case, I feel like a grey or another red even would have been more beneficial. Derwent Chromaflow Pencils, Set of 72 in Tin, 3.5mm Round

A recent collection of pencils with a higher percentage of oil than wax. This is unusual for Derwent as they have for years concentrated on pencils with a wax based core. Its important that you understand the prices I am listing here are prices put forward before Derwent have even officially announced the Derwent Chromaflow 36, 48 and 72. The reason I am highlighting this is because traditionally, when new products are released the prices shortly reduce. The photo above shows an amalgamated set of Derwent pencils. All these colours are rated LF Blue Wool Scale 4 or above. Derwent Lightfast Pencils Don’t confuse permanence with lightfastness, there are still a number of lower rated pigments here, though not too many.

Metallic pencils

I think it is important to note that Derwent did not create the Chromaflow to be highly lightfast and aimed at professional colored pencil artists, if you are looking for a highly lightfast product from Derwent there are plenty of other pencils in their range that will cater to your needs. One of the things I think Derwent excel at is providing pencils for certain groups, every group from young artists, crafters, adult colouring book artists, Professional Colored Pencils artists and many more are all catered for under the one banner. Lightfast coloured pencils have been a holy grail that artists in coloured pencil have wanted for a long time. In January 2014, Peter sorted out the pencils he uses regularly into a new set of zipped cases and prepared a small card to remind him of the performance of the contents of each set. The card for Inktense is presented here to show the vibrancy of the colours. Caran d’Ache brought out the Luminance range a few years ago and these were the best attempt so far at a pencil to meet the American ASTMS 6901 standard. Previous attempts by Prismacolor were dropped as unprofitable and the old Derwent Signature departed many years ago as they were too dry and scratchy (the combination of pigment and binder at that time was not at all good).

The smooth, creamy laydown of opaque colour is compatible with oil mediums and produces a paint-like effect when dissolved with solvent. Lightfast pencils have a strong point for ease of sharpening so are ideal for detailed drawings and defining negative space. Where I think this product would benefit someone new to coloured pencil is as a practice pencil. I also think that given the nature of the breakage I experienced I would caution anyone who wanted to use these for a larger drawing as you won’t be able to replace used-up pencils without purchasing a whole new set. The paint used to colour the wood of the pencils is environmentally sound and uses no solvents. This does mean, however, that some colour may be expected to leach from the barrel of the pencil on to your hand when used on a hot day. There are many pencils available in the Derwent ranges but for this feature I want to focus on the three that I use most within my own work – Derwent’s Drawing, Lightfast & Chromaflow pencils. This doesn’t mean that I don’t also utilise some of the others not mentioned here in my work when I am looking for a specific application but these are more my ‘go to’ pencils. But don't let this minor hitch deter you! This issue typically comes up only when you're heavily diluting the colours. Even then, it's not a common problem. When you're using these pencils in their dry form, and then adding water to your paper, you're more than likely to be just fine. One thing to keep in mind One thing that is notable between the pencils is the look and feel of the pencils themselves. The Chromaflow are definitely thinner and lighter due to the size of the barrel and the type of wood used in manufacturing but this does not affect the quality of the cores. A note about lightfastness
