About this deal

For anyone looking to maximize the value of an Alder Lake processor, DDR4 memory is what you'll be after, and there isn't any point as far as we can tell going beyond DDR4-4000. So if DDR4-3200 CL16 and DDR4-4000 CL18 are priced fairly similarly in your region, you might as well go with 4000. Now that we've compared DDR4 and DDR5 memory across a massive range of games, the next step is to provide a detailed memory scaling video for Alder Lake and that's already in the works. The plan is to compare a wide range of DDR4 and DDR5 memory to find the sweet spot for Intel 12th-gen series, in both games and applications. Stay tuned for that. Shopping Shortcuts Depending on the games you play, DDR5 memory can offer little to no performance gain, and this will be true for most titles. The best performing examples show up to a 20% boost which is significant, and here we're comparing premium DDR4-3600 memory to premium DDR5-6000, with the DDR5 kit coming in at a ~70% price premium. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is very CPU intensive but at 1080p with a 6900 XT we're able to turn the game from CPU limited to GPU limited by the time DDR4-2933 CL16 is reached. We do see small improvements as memory performance is increased, but from 2933 to 6200 we're looking at a 7% increase in 1% lows, that's it. In total we spent a few weeks testing 41 games and we'll take a look at the side-by-side comparison across all those games in a second. But if we look at an average graph, calculated using the geomean, we see that on average DDR5 memory offered just a 3% boost at 1080p, 2% at 1440p and then one percent at 4K.

DDR5 DRAM FOR INTEL

To speed up design, development and qualification of next-generation DDR5-based platforms, Micron today launched its DR5 Technology Enablement Program together with Cadence, Montage, Rambus, Renesas, and Synopsys. Qualified participants of the program will be able to get DDR5 devices and modules, module components (DDR5 RCD, DDR5 DB, DDR5 SPD-Hub, DDR5 PMIC, DDR5 temperature sensor, etc.), data sheets, electrical and thermal models as well as consultation on signal integrity and other technical support. It's similar in concept to error correction on SSDs (NAND): the error rate is high enough that a modern TLC SSD without error correction would be unusable without it. Otherwise if your chips had to be perfect, these ultra-fine processes would never yield well enough to be usable.

Finally, we take a look at War Thunder and here we're seeing pretty impressive performance gains at 1080p, though how useful a 24% performance boost is when you're already over 200 fps is hard to argue about. Still, even at 4K we're looking at up to a 9% performance boost. With Intel's "Alder Lake" 12th Generation desktop processors, we have the debut of a new memory standard in consumer PCs: DDR5, which is used by many of the motherboards that support the new chips. One thing we know about DDR5 is that it’s "faster" than DDR4 by the most commonly marketed numbers, but those numbers are just a measure of theoretical peak data rate. (For a primer on the essentials of DDR5, see What Is DDR5? Everything You Need to Know About the Latest PC Memory Standard.)Testing PUGB shows a small improvement to the 1% lows with DDR5, about 5 - 7% so nothing to write home about. Meanwhile, the average frame rate remained much the same, so either memory technology will allow you to squeeze the most out of an Alder Lake CPU in this game.

There were also games that ran slower with DDR5, by a 5% margin or greater, such as Age of Empires, Hitman 2, The Division 2, Valorant and Death Stranding. Also, chances are 12th-gen Core series owners won't feel the need to upgrade until 14th-gen hits at the absolute earliest, and at that point you'd need a new motherboard anyway. Moreover, of the 41 games tested, 26 of them saw 4% or less variation in performance, which is basically nothing and gameplay is identical. So for over 60% of the games tested performance was a match. It's also worth noting that for 75% of the games tested, DDR5-6000 memory failed to offer over a 5% improvement. gzfsozyccuqwcx5bs3dq-p2yzo8-69eb1f4d7-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, gzfsozyccuqwcx5bs4qa-p299q7-a9521f4ee-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, gzfsozyccuqwcx5bsyyq-pv69oz-aed1b09c6-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, gzfsozyccuqwcx5bwfuq-pw4gfb-c2c42381f-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, gzfstpqccuqvax5bssvq-p0x8hm-7a3d7367f-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, gzfstpqccuqvax5bsxsq-p2oajs-b2e67f00b-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, gzfstpqccuqvax5bsy3a-pfuzjd-60f8ba5de-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, Corsair did provide a faster DDR4 kit but it didn't work on our Z690 board, so we maxed out at DDR4-4000 with just shy of 60 GB/s. This suggests that as usual, when factoring in prices CL16 DDR4-3600 to CL18 DDR4-3800 is going to make the most sense. Fortnite also saw some benefit to using DDR5 memory, though for the most part the margins were less impressive. We did see a 12% boost to the 1% lows at 1080p, with a 6% improvement for the average frame rate and this was reduced to 5% at 1440p and then nothing at 4K.

Based on those figures, DDR5 does very little to aid the Core i9-12900K across a wide range of today's games. In contrast, the 7-Zip Beta compression/decompression benchmark shows tremendous gains in file-compression performance with the DDR5 kit. (See the 7-Zip results on their own tab.) So, in addition to the built-in 7-Zip benchmark, we added an actual 7.6GB file-compression time (a second 7-Zip result) to our timed benchmarks. Even the average frame rate was boosted by 10% and 13% at 1080p. The margins are neutralized at the GPU-limited 4K resolution, but still some impressive gains at 1080p and 1440p in this title.File compression and video encoding are two tests that show decent gains. The G.Skill kit is the fastest of all tested kits, though as it's the fastest on-paper kit, that’s not a surprise. Even less of a surprise are the stellar synthetic AIDA64 results, which show the G.Skill kit leading the way. The latency result is fantastic too. For testing Microsoft Flight Simulator I'm using the latest DirectX 12 version and here we're only seeing mild gains in the range of low single-digit percentages, so nothing to get excited about. If we recalculate using the memory tested here, the Trident Z RGB, DDR4-3600 CL14 and DDR5-6000 CL36 we find a similar margin using the Core i9-12900K and Aorus Elite AX, basically DDR5 ends up costing 20% more. clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-246-30-86_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604427359-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-246-30-86_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604431429-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-246-30-86_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604431547-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-246-30-86_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604435637-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-246-30-86_s-23-203-249-90_ts-1604427151-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-246-30-86_s-23-203-249-90_ts-1604429594-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-246-30-86_s-23-203-249-90_ts-1604433473-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-246-30-86_s-23-203-249-90_ts-1604433539-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-246-30-86_s-88-221-134-224_ts-1604435698-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 54-246-30-86_s-95-101-129-96_ts-1604424926-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net,
