But while he displayed excellent manners and was very well behaved, Tao was hiding a terrible past that no child should have had to live through. So I am a massive Cathy Glass fan and have been for around ten years now; she's probably the Author that I own the most books by.Lucy was born to a single mother who had been abused and neglected for most of her own childhood. Right from the beginning Lucy’s mother couldn’t cope, but it wasn’t until Lucy reached eight years old that she was finally taken into permanent foster care. Despite concerns being raised by her teachers and other adults Lucy wasn’t taken into permanent foster care until she was eight years old. But even then her problems weren’t over. As she was moved from one foster home to another she became increasingly distressed. In the other books I'd read, Cathy's own children were a lot younger and it was nice to read about them as adults and be updated on their lives. Lucy’s story could have a happy ending but it could so easily have been different. Policy and priorities need to change so that every child has a permanent family of their own as soon as possible. I am very proud of all of my children not only for what they have achieved but also for the people they have become.

Excellent as usual from this author. I have great admiration for this author having worked with young people and while I know there are people who believe that they are the stories from the children she cares for, I also believe they are hers too. She has taken a long road from when her own children were small and she and her husband began on the road of fostering. She las learned so much through these years and I believe a lot of parents/ carers could and do learn a lot from reading her books. The names of those involved are changed and the development of the family joins the lessons learned from fostering, by all of the family. Having read all of Cathy Glass’ books, I had high expectations of this book, and they were fulfilled! I recommend this book to anybody. They're real, and they're unpleasant, and I feel a little bad about reading about people's unhappiness. However, I do really enjoy these books, and I feel that Cathy Glass does a very good job in making people aware of what awful things go on behind closed doors. I have dabbled in fostering, and it's hard and heartbreaking to witness what people do to children.

Tilly manages to get out of the situation, leaving her mother and stepfather to sort themselves out. Things are rarely straight forward, even when you’re thinking, ‘things couldn’t get any worse.’ Amazing book as always from Cathy, can't wait for the next! Have read every single one of her books!"

Adrian, Lucy and Paula are all young adults now. Adrian went away to study at university and then returned home. Lucy and Paula went to local colleges and university. Publication was in 2020 and the story is set in the very recent past (obvious from the first few sentences). I've just had to give up on a book of which I had high expectations so needed a replacement to settle me and Cathy Glass books are consistently good quality. It's always a very grounding experience to read CG's sensible approach to the difficulties that life throws at everyone (those permanently in her life as well as those she cares for temporarily). She has strong morals which she is unafraid to share but always considers the sensitivities of others around her. Whilst she is clear about her views she would never hurt anyone by speaking inappropriately. That doesn't stop her being clear and straightforward. Wonderfully written, not only a great author but clearly such a caring person. I think about fostering. However sometimes she does state things unnecessarily, because everyone already knows, such as the fact that pregnant women urgently need the toilet... There was also a lot of bitter comments about her ex John in this one, but that's not really a bad thing #drama Tao formerly lived in Nigeria, but was kidnapped by his mother and taken to the UK illegally. To help support her debauched life of drinking, and drugs, his abusive mother was a prostitute. The mother cast Tayo out onto the streets after he sustained an injury and was no longer able to earn money for the woman. Based on the horrors that he suffered on the streets of Central London, Glass wrote that she had never met a child that showed the kind of strength as Tayo. He had the kind of inner resolve that she had never seen before.
