About this deal

There are two options to choose from with a 20kg set and a 30kg set, the latter being our preference as it is going to provide more longevity as you progress. This might seem like a pretty basic question but it is one that is worth exploring. Unless a dumbbell has a fixed weight like hex cast iron or rubber dumbbells then the chances are it is adjustable. The 552 isn’t the only adjustable weight from Bowflex. The 1090i adjustable dumbbell, for instance, ranges between 4kg and 41kg, while the brand’s adjustable kettlebell ranges between 3.5kg and 18kg. Add the SelectTech dumbbell stand and adjustable workout bench to your range and you can transform any space in your home into a personal fitness centre! These may not be cheap (and at the moment are only available as a pair) but they are among the best on offer and for anyone needing to go 24kg plus per dumbbell will benefit from these both in terms of muscle/strength gains but also in terms of value for money. If 24kg will suffice then you may be better off financially buying 3 or 4 sets of dumbbells – but you will still have the issue of storing them.

If 20kg is enough of a maximum weight for you then this is a top option, but if you need more weight then you might want to read on. Although they aren’t cheap, a set of adjustable dumbbells are certainly worth the cost. If you can afford it, they will make working out at home much easier, thanks to the time saving, space saving features This weight is split between the two dumbbells so the 30kg set gives you 2 x 15kg dumbbells which for some people might be limiting – if that’s enough for you and you think you would benefit from a barbell too then this is an excellent option. All in all, if 15kg per dumbbell and a 30kg barbell is enough weight for your home workouts then this is an excellent buy. We could not fault this set based on the price, weight load, build quality, and ease of use during testing.Adjustable dumbbells are well sought after, which keeps supply low & demand high. The weight plates are filled with cement and have a vinyl plastic coating which although doesn’t have the most premium look to it, does seem pretty durable and hard wearing. Either way, for indoor use these weights will be fine. MuscleSquad have put together one of the best sets of adjustable dumbbells we have had the pleasure of testing and what sets these apart from the rest is their capacity for relatively heavy weights with the maximum weight per dumbbell sitting at an impressive 32.5kg. Most of the adjustable weights max out at around 25kg and so with the ability to go to an extra 7.5kg per dumbbell you are getting even more versatility and of course more value for money. On the other hand, if functional training is more your bag, fixed weight dumbbells will be the one for you. You can, and they’re called Adjustable Dumbbells! There’s a little bit of confusion around the adjustable dumbbell market, but they can be separated into Manual, or Automatic Dial Adjustable. There is a Bowflex app that can be used with the Selecttech range with over 30 exercises at your disposal. They can of course also be used without the app. You won’t be able to load these dumbbells up with a ton of weight – so once you progressively overload and start lifting heavier and heavier weights, these might become inadequate. All in all, these are an excellent option, are very affordable and the kettlebell feature gives you access to even more workout options. These dumbbells are very comfortable to use, very well made and if you can get past the high price then they will provide a good long term investment.

Sold as a single dumbbell, this selectorised model can function at 16 different weights and is the easiest of all the dumbbells we tested to change from one weight to another – it is as simple as twisting the handle. The handle itself is made from a high quality rubber and features a textured finish to ensure you have maximum grip. You can twist the handle either way to move from one weight to another and the weight is conveniently displayed in both pounds and kilograms. Once you have made your choice you simply lift the dumbbell up from the base and hey presto – you have a dumbbell weighing exactly the weight you selected. If you need something a little heavier, you should take a look into the Bowflex 1090i dumbbells, which increase the maximum weight per dumbbell to 41kg! BOWFLEX SELECTTECH 1090I DUMBBELLS When using our link below you can grab a 2 year warranty so if your budget allows this is without a doubt our top option. The Bowflex dumbbells have an impressive maximum weight of 24kg and in total they replace the need for 15 different sets of weights with the lowest weight being 2kg. Generally they increase in 1 or 2 kg increments and the weight is selected using the simple to use dial on the side of each dumbbell. The weights available with the ISOGYM are 2.3kg, 3.8kg, 4.2kg, 5.3kg, 5.8kg, 6.8kg, 7.2kg, 8.4kg, 8.8kg, 10.3kg, 12.5kg, 14.5kg, 15.5kg, 17.5kg, 18.5kg and 20kg which means it has 16 different weights to choose from in total.

The weight plates contain cement and the plastic casing is pretty solid but beware using these on outdoor surfaces as over time you are likely to see damage to the outer layer and pieces of cement coming out of the weights. If only it were so simple. There are a huge variety of options on the market today, and the argument over which is the best dumbbell is still very much up for debate. Selector pin dumbbells work in much the same way as dial a weight models but use a pin instead of dial to select the weight. The remaining weights are then usually left in the base. Bowflex have established themselves as a leading player in home gym equipment and their Selecttech range is some of the best we have seen in both the kettlebell and dumbbell categories. The Selecttech 552 come as a pair of dial based adjustable dumbbells and they have an impressive weight range from 2kg right up to 24kg each. The plates are made from metal but have a durable moulding around them which offers the perfect balance between a smooth feel and long lasting durability – this combination of metal and plastic moulding also allows for a quieter workout as you don’t get the metal on metal clanging sounds which can be off-putting for some.
