About this deal

The Mini BIC’s only downside is it’s not wind-resistant. A simple windscreen can usually solve this problem though.

BIC Mini Pocket Lighter

The benefit of torch lighters is that you can aim the flame in any direction, even upside down. Because of this, they are often used for lighting pipes. They are also often used as cigar lighters because they get hot. Popularized by Hollywood and conflict is the Zippo Lighter, carried by soldiers, heavy smokers and MadMen. The Zippo lighter is an icon for many years and will be for a great deal of time. Trustee Zippo given to me by my best bud.

While I would generally recommend you go with a Mini BIC or Mini Clipper for the weight and cost savings, there are some situations where a highly weather-resistant lighter might be preferable — such as emergency or survival scenarios. Also, if you aren’t concerned with the extra weight and bulk it’s hard to put a price on peace of mind. Pre-Filled vs. Empty

My number 1 favorite lighter to take with me on hiking trips is the humble mini BIC lighter. Can strike for many times and always ready when you need it. BIC lighters are popular for a reason. The Humble BIC mini lighter, beloved by many. In a pinch, you can also use other fuels in a Zippo lighter, including butane, naptha (also called white gas or Coleman fuel), or gasoline. We also tested the Zippo Matte Lighter which uses Zippo Lighter Fluid. The two types of fuel used by the lighters we tested Note that many plastic sparkwheel lighters are actually refillable (see how to refill a BIC lighter). However, because they are so cheap, most people treat them as disposable. But should you truly need a weather-resistant lighter, the UCO Stormproof Torch is your best option.

The Mini BIC is also decently water-resistant. After performing 3 “Soak Tests” with it — submerging the lighter in water, shaking it out, and then trying to light it in 1-minute intervals — it took an average of 2 minutes before it started lighting again consistently. What is your favorite lighter for on trail use or day to day life? Let me know down in the comments. Some fire lighters are better than others in that regard. And offer different kinds of waterproof levels, resistance to the elements plus many other factors.

BIC Mini Lighter Last for Your Entire Thru-Hike? Will a BIC Mini Lighter Last for Your Entire Thru-Hike?

There is something about lighting a Zippo that is immensely satisfying and any other lighter on this list will not come close to it. If you want to enjoy your cigar at the end of your hike, lighting up around a campfire or just want to light a stove. A Zippo will give you the feeling you need.Permanent matches have gotten a lot of hype from the survivalist community. Yes, they are cool, and you get many more lights out of them than with standard matches. The flame is also more resistant to wind than a standard match. However, much of the info about permanent matches is a bit misleading. The most important thing to carry with you in a ZipLoc bag is tinder material. Tinder comes in a whole lot of forms but most common are strips of birch bark, cotton pads soaked in lip balm or dryer lint. Tinder will capture the spark and ideally light up and burn for a few minutes. This will give you the time to keep adding small fuel to eventually a big fire. Unless you need a highly weather-resistant lighter such as the UCO Stormproof Torch, I’d recommend you go with a flint lighter.
