The abuse, deception, torment, lies by omission, and conspiracies were appalling. I didn’t think I could get over it, but I’m glad I did because all those negatives turn into positives a million times over. Seeing someone like Hardin, who had such a dark past, brought to light by Tessa was the best part of this series. There were a lot of moves, and it was no picnic for Anna to push through her husband’s three deployments to Iraq. But they survived, even though Anna Todd will be the first person to admit that the journey to her current situation has been an insane and chaotic one.

Hardin Scott was never a character that I particularly liked, he was never entirely comfortable with his actions during the original run of the series, and while I understood his actions, I didn’t condone or approve of them. I don’t know yet, in case you were wondering, but I was blown away by this release. Again, I was skeptical that this would be just a goofy reimagining, the same story played out differently and done just for the money. In year 2015, Todd announced that she would be publishing Before, a prequel novel that tells the events of After from the perspective of the Hardin Scott. I have no doubt that while Molly, Hardin, and Zed are redeemable, Steph is not. And I appreciate that because Anna doesn’t sugarcoat who she is or how she acts, and even though I’m starting to hate her, I appreciate seeing how she thinks about herself. Tessa and Hardin were certain they could make things work, but that was before a revelation shook Tessa’s world. Now she isn’t so certain that she knows Hardin.
