About this deal

Not only did Bathsheba feel the sting of adultery – some even speculate it was a forced relation – but she also found herself impacted by the subsequent death of her husband. Sin opened the door for havoc in the woman’s life.

Adams, Ann Jensen (ed.) (1998). Rembrandt's Bathsheba Reading King David's Letter. New York: Cambridge University Press. Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, ( BK) and he went to her and made love to her. She gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon. ( BL) The Lord loved him; 25 and because the Lord loved him, he sent word through Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah. [ e] ( BM) Judaism [ edit ] Relationship to Ahithophel [ edit ] William Blake's painting Bathsheba at the Bath, Tate Britain [9] Ynghyd ag Efa, Bathseba oedd yr unig fenyw bron y gellid cyfiawnhau ei darlunio yn noethlymun yn hawdd ac yn rheolaidd mewn celf Gristnogol, ac felly mae hi'n ffigwr pwysig yn natblygiad y darlun noethlymun mewn celf ganoloesol. Er ei fod weithiau'n cael ei ddangos mewn dillad ar adegau eraill yn ei stori, y darlun mwyaf cyffredin, mewn celf ganoloesol a diweddarach, oedd Bathseba yn ei baddon, dyma rai luniau ohoni trwy'r oesoedd: Uriah said to David, “The ark ( O) and Israel and Judah are staying in tents, [ a] and my commander Joab and my lord’s men are camped in the open country. How could I go to my house to eat and drink and make love ( P) to my wife? As surely as you live, I will not do such a thing!”Frédéric Bazille recalled Bathsheba in his La Toilette, painted for the 1870 Paris Salon. Similar in size and format, Bazille's work shares some of the mood of the Rembrandt: according to critic Dianne Pitman, "not the unfolding of a specific narrative but the interplay of sensual effect and solemnity, blending realistic intimacy and dignified remoteness". [32] A 1963 print by Picasso, Seated Nude and Another Figure, refers to the overtly voyeuristic properties of Bathsheba. [33] In popular culture [ edit ] While the army was on campaign, David summoned Uriah in the hope that Uriah would have sex with Bathsheba, and in turn be convinced that the child she would eventually bear belonged to him. However, Uriah was unwilling to disregard rules applying to warriors on campaign, [8] preferring to remain with the palace troops rather than sleep in his own bed. a b Lawrence O. Richards (2002). Bible Reader's Companion. David C Cook. pp.210–. ISBN 978-0-7814-3879-7. Perhaps out of loyalty to the ‘hero of the Old Testament’ contemporary evangelicals often speak of this story as more of ‘sordid affair’ which, while horrific and sinful, seems to most of us a lesser sin than the sin of rape,” The Gospel Coalition stated.

The chapters where Bathsheba appears are especially terse, even for biblical Hebrew narrative. Particularly in 2 Samuel, Bathsheba’s motives and emotions go undescribed when certain actions are narrated. The gaps in the text have been filled by interpreters who characterize her on the spectrum from passive victim to active seductress.

4. Bathsheba raised a king.

Absalom was exiled for three years (2 Samuel 13:38). He lived in Jerusalem apart from the palace life for two years thereafter (14:28). After four full years, he led his revolt (15:7). This means Absalom’s revolt happened 11-12 years after the rape of Tamar. We’ll go with twelve, and have David 62 years old. So, are we to assume that she was a willing adulteress? If so, why is she not punished? Why does Nathan only threaten David? There is an answer to this question, but we can only see it if we make a careful study of chronology, genealogy, and name lists. Chronology and Genealogy

The life of King David, as narrated by the prophet Nathan, and including the story of Uriah and Bathsheba, is the subject of the novel The Secret Chord by Geraldine Brooks. [37]Now king Solomon loved many foreign women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites; of the nations concerning which Yahweh said to the children of Israel, “You shall not go among them, neither shall they come among you; for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods.” Solomon joined to these in love. He had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. When Solomon was old, his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with Yahweh his God, as the heart of David his father was.” ( 1 Kings 11:1-4 WEB) Another event happened about this same time, which forms a second witness to our chronological suggestion: the rape of Tamar. We are told that Amnon and Absalom were born around the same time, after David became king at Hebron. Let us put their births when David was 31. Amnon must be old enough to have entered adolescence, and old enough to contemplate rape as a possibility, something unlikely in a boy only fifteen or sixteen years old. In David’s fiftieth year, Amnon would have been about nineteen. The story of Bathsheba, David and Uriah is echoed in Thomas Hardy's novel Far from the Madding Crowd. On the seventh day the child died. David’s attendants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they thought, “While the child was still living, he wouldn’t listen to us when we spoke to him. How can we now tell him the child is dead? He may do something desperate.”

Cultural references [ edit ] Art – Bathsheba in her bath [ edit ] Painting by Artemisia Gentileschi Bathsheba ( / b æ θ ˈ ʃ iː b ə/ or / ˈ b æ θ ʃ ɪ b ə/; Hebrew: בַּת־שֶׁבַע, Baṯ-šeḇaʿ, Bat-Sheva or Batsheva, "daughter of Sheba" or "daughter of the oath") [1] was the wife of Uriah the Hittite and later of David, according to the Hebrew Bible. She was the mother of Solomon, who succeeded David as king, making her the Gebirah (queen mother). She is best known for the Biblical narrative in which she was summoned by King David, who had seen her bathing and lusted after her. [2] Biblical narrative [ edit ] Jean-Léon Gérôme's depiction of Bathsheba bathing watched by David. So while Joab had the city under siege, he put Uriah at a place where he knew the strongest defenders were. 17 When the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of the men in David’s army fell; moreover, Uriah the Hittite died. Bathsheba found herself pregnant. A deceitful David attempted to cover the sin. He invited Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband, home for a time, hoping the man of great integrity would have relations with his wife. But Uriah, knowing his men, remained on the field and in battle conditions, refusing such luxury. As a result, David sinned further by penning instructions for Uriah’s “accidental” death on the battlefield. This story is that of David’s fall. David, unlike Adam, was a king, a leader, a guide, a teacher (psalmist). He was like the angel of Yahweh (2 Samuel 14:17, 20; 19:27). The analogy is to Lucifer in the Garden of Eden. Lucifer was chief of the angelic tutors to humanity during our childhood, and he led Adam and Eve into death by abusing his position (Galatians 3:19, 4:1-3). David did the same. David’s sin is a definite “advance” on Adam’s.

5. Bathsheba pressed David to keep his promise.

Allusions to Bathsheba at Her Bath have been noted in the works of 19th- and 20th-century artists. It is thought to have inspired The Surprised Nymph (1859–61), an early figure by Édouard Manet that playfully references old master sources. [29] Edgar Degas' pastel Woman Having Her Hair Combed (c. 1885) has been compared to Bathsheba for similarities in the model's attitude; [28] Degas' father was an acquaintance of Louis La Caze, who owned Bathsheba prior to bequeathing it to the Louvre in 1869. [30] [31] When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him. 27 After the time of mourning ( V) was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased ( W) the Lord. Nathan Rebukes David ( X) Was she worried? Did she pray for her son? Did she have conversations with him or simply stand by and watch? The Bible isn’t clear, but the outcome remains crystal. Nathan replied, “The Lord has taken away ( AV) your sin. ( AW) You are not going to die. ( AX) 14 But because by doing this you have shown utter contempt for [ c] the Lord, ( AY) the son born to you will die.” I think that, while she might be innocent about relationships and love matters, Bathsheba knows how to use her charms to get what she wants and maybe she does this unconsciously. During the whole movie, she holds Oak and Boldwood in her hand, she knows this and for a time she seems like she is enjoying it; both of them will do anything for her and she does not even have to ask. Perhaps, after meeting officer Troy she realizes that men can be manipulated to either get what one wants or simply to not get …show more content…
