The Bat-Signal made its first on-screen appearance in the Batman and Robin serial by Columbia. In its first incarnation, it was simply a high-powered projector that was kept in Commissioner Gordon's office. When needed, he would simply wheel the Bat-Signal over to his office window and shine it directly to the sky. Though small, it was powerful enough to cast an image of the Bat symbol against the clouds. In this blog, we will briefly examine the basics of lung ultrasound and some normal lung ultrasound findings and B-lines. It is imperative to be familiar with ultrasound physics, normal lung ultrasound findings, and the limitations of ultrasound technology to execute POCUS proficiently. Sonography of the lungs is best performed by using a low-frequency curvilinear transducer (3–6 MHz) ( 7). Microconvex transducers (if available) exhibit the additional benefit of having a smaller footprint for better intercostal placement and application in paediatric patients. M-mode and the absence of lung sliding are shown as the ‘stratosphere sign’: Parallel horizontal lines above and below the pleural line, resemble a ‘barcode.’ This sign indicates a pneumothorax at this intercoastal space At the beginning of The Lego Batman Movie, Commissioner Gordon attempted to use the Bat-Signal to alert Batman only for it to be egged by Egghead thus disabling it. Later Batman uses the Bat-Signal to make different versions of the symbol for Robin, Barbara, Alfred, and many of Batman's allies summoning them to team up and defeat the Joker. The B-lines tend to extend through the lung field and do not become less bright, unlike A-lines, which tend to become less echogenic with depth. The normal lung surface (Figure 2) associates lung sliding with horizontal repetitions of the pleural line, called A-lines. They indicate gas (physiological or free). Lung sliding is a to-and-fro movement at the pleural line, spreading below. The M-mode helps to understand that this movement is relative to superficial tissues (seashore sign). Lung-sliding indicates that the pleural line also contains the visceral pleura. Lung-sliding, physiologically more discrete at the upper parts, can be very discrete in pathological conditions. Some filters, especially average, dynamic noise, can make discrete lung-sliding more difficult to distinguish. We usually bypass all filters.
