Aultmore 12 Year Old is part of Dewar’s The Last Great Malts range launched in 2014. This little-known distillery now has an official 12 years old, 18 years (travel retail), 21 years (travel retail) and 25 years old. There have been plans for a 30 and 35 year-old, but apparently they cancelled them, not sure why. Aultmore 12 Year Old is an ex-bourbon matured, unpeated single malt Scotch whisky intended to compete with entry level offerings from Diageo and Chivas. On the surface, it appears to do everything right: it’s age stated, non-chill filtered, of natural color and bottled at 46% ABV. How does it compare to thecompetition? In 2015, John Dewar & Sons launched the “Last Great Malts” collection in an effort to be more competitive in the growing single malt market. Among the line-up were three Aultmore releases – a 12 year old, a 21 year old travel retail exclusive, and a 25 year old limited release. An 18 year old was introduced at a laterdate.

Palate (undiluted): slightly sharp arrival, medium-bodied and creamy, with more pear and green grape notes, there's a hint of cereal (barley) sweetness, but it's subdued and doesn't dominate. Malt, banana, dried fruit, vanilla and a light bit of tartness and waxy citrus peel. There’s a buttery undertone to it that adds a nice bit of dimension to overall aroma. The Aultmore 12 Years may be a little light and delicate, but it’s not the average young Speysider. Fresh spring-time nose, lots of apples, with some mineral touches that give it an old-school touch.
