Undying Loyalty: Like Medeiros, he keeps fighting even after it's clear that the Brazilian Empire has lost. In his case, he's willing to render the entire Earth uninhabitable—killing numerous Brazilian survivors—to get the last blow against China, who killed Brazil. The initial set-up is novel and intriguing, but after establishing the core idea, the story meanders and offers more fan service (celebrating geekdom and pop culture references) than provocative food for thought.

This really was a joy to be a part of and an excellent listen. I think my only gripe was the story seemed to have really gotten going, and then it ended. Of course, it's that vast and large a world, as in the whole universe, that there is much more scope for Bob and his replicants, and the last few survivors from Earth. The author deserves big thumbs up for the main characters, who are well-crafted, full of personality and humour. Kuiper Belt: A "junkyard" of countless icy bodies left over from the solar system's formation that extends as a flat belt or ring from the orbit of Pluto through the Oort Cloud to the edge of the solar system. In these novels the Kuiper Belt is often mentioned as a place to gather resources for building auto-factories. In May 2019, Taylor was invited by Google to one of the "Talks at Google" where he gave some insight into what inspired his writings, and what his plans are for the next few years. well, Bob is different. A bit of an independent loaner with no political axe to grind, Bob sets about creating a 'world' HE can live in first! Still, the prime directive is all about replicating, so bring on the Bobs!

The man in charge of training Bob and ensuring the success of the project as a whole. He is friendly and amenable, and acts much like how Bob would expect someone from the 21st-century to act. A Brazilian replicant left behind in the Sol system. He was uploaded to a number of gunships rather than probes, so he has no real manufacturing capability, but he is the last military force standing in Sol. The story is interesting and fast-paced. In addition, Ray Porter is extremely talented and did an incredible job of delivering the story, as well as all the emotion and humor that went with it. I think this is one of his best performances. Modern Stasis: While both technology and culture have advanced, Bob is surprised at how little. The technological advancements are purely practical, to the point that no one seems to care about the physics-breaking subspace except as a basic method of propulsion. Some of Bob's basic programming skills are seen as incredible by the scientists working with him.Howard and Bridget deploy floating city, Rivendell, in Odin’s atmosphere, floating blimp animal promptly attempts to mate with it The Quiet One: He barely speaks to the other Bobs in Epsilon Eridani, and doesn't seem particularly concerned when he can't create a communications station in Beta Hydri. FAITH discovers they have no control over Riker, Butterworth concedes 4 months of first two ships' schedule to shorten 3rd ship schedule by 1 year

The Theocracy: America elected a hyper-religious president in 2036. In addition to his blatant religious agenda, he had no political skill whatsoever, breaking laws left and right to appoint his hyper-religious idiot friends to key positions, claiming God would sort it out. This, predictably, resulted in a horrific recession, and the next president elected was an atheist. That drove the religious right into a frenzy, and they launched a successful coup, replacing the United States with the Free American Independent Theocratic Hegemony. By the time Bob is awoken, FAITH has dozens if not hundreds of factions fighting each other over dogma, and do far more damage to each other than their enemies. Bob manages to keep them satisfied long enough to escape in the probe. All across the USA, people are showing up dead. The deaths don't appear to be connected in any way until one particular death occurs and gets the Secretary of Defense's attention. He arranges for a task force to investigate. Taylor, Dennis E. (2020-04-21). "The release date for Heaven's River on Audible has been set for September 24th". @Dennis_E_Taylor . Retrieved 2020-05-30.Interestingly, The Others' never mention the massive amount of energy that would be produced by the Dyson Sphere they plan on building. The only goal they speak of is creating more living space. Charles reports material shortages to Riker, Riker tries to sell UN on putting Earth population in stasis Herschel and Neil investigate 2 Others cargo ship remains at Delta Pavonis, find non-fusion power source Truly Single Parent: Each new Bob is a copy of one of the Bobs that came before, making father/son and brotherly relationships obvious. The Bobs still notably avoid referring to each other that way, though.

Other Me Annoys Me: There are a few Bobs that just can't be around others (such as Mario), as well as some odd companions who like to annoy each other (Riker and Homer, Calvin and Goku). Meaningful Rename: Every new Bob clone takes on a new first name to distinguish themselves from the other clones. The replicant in the Brazilian probe. He is a ruthless military mind who has decided that the best way to colonize the stars is to kill all the other probes. Self-Duplication: The point of a Von Neumann probe is that it can make more of itself to spread across the galaxy. Bob hesitates before making his first batch, but soon has no choice but to go through with it. Each new clone has a slightly different part of the original Bob's personality emphasized, and chooses a new name for himself. Axe-Crazy: He makes Medeiros look sane, spitting vitriol and trying to render the Earth uninhabitable out of spite.

Yet salvation may come from an unlikely source. A couple of eighth-generation Bobs have found something out in deep space. All it will take to save the Earth and perhaps all of humanity is for them to get it to Sol — unless the Others arrive first. The main story involves the revival of a wealthy accident victim who had his brain preserved into a machine/human self replicating entity. When Bob regains consciousness he finds himself in a different century in a world at the brink of nuclear destruction. He escapes to a nearby star system as the world self destructs. Unfortunately other countries launched similar human/machine self replication hybrids and Bob must fight to the death with a nasty piece of work from Brazil. Bill holds moot to discuss Herschel & Neil's findings, announces some monitoring drones have been found by Others I wasn’t that impressed with the science either. The human brain has been described as the equivalent of 17 /billion/ computers. Quantum mechanics may someday make it possible to replicate those 17 billions computers, and it might make sense to send such a construct out into the void, to ‘go where no man has gone before’, but that construct would not be the original ‘Bob’. At best it would be a duplicate of what Bob was at the moment of his death. Neural networks may make it possible for a digital construct to learn and change, but feeling and leaps of intuition require the interaction of electronic impulses and a massive cornucopia of hormones in a bewildering series of combinations…in humans. How would you replicate that in what amounts to an AI? Strike on 82 Eridani takes place with Loki leading, Bobs claim system, discover 2 habitable planets and 1 moon
