About this deal

A snobbish Danish literary author is challenged to write a crime novel in thirty days, travelling to a small village in Iceland for inspiration, and then a body appears … an atmospheric, darkly funny, twisty debut thriller, first in an addictive new series. At first, I didn’t get along very well with Hannah. She seemed to have both low self esteem and a superiority complex. She writes Literature, don’t you know. Which is infinitely better than popular genres for the masses, obviously. Hate is too strong a word but it was definitely dislike at first sight. However, as the story progressed, I warmed to her, and I also feel like she makes a huge character arc throughout the book. My love for "trapped in the arctic" horror really started with John Carpenter's The Thing. I love the snow and skiing, bundling up for that sudden blast of cold as you leave your very comfortable and toasty "temporary" abode. I think these type of movies turn that environment on its head, taking away those comforts and then having something terrifying outside to worry about.

As the month comes to an end, with the sun due to rise, the vampires prepare to burn the fuel line running through the town, which will cause it to explode and destroy evidence of their presence. Realizing Stella is trapped and that he cannot beat the vampires in his current state, Eben injects himself with Billy's blood. Now a vampire, Eben confronts Marlow and after a vicious fight, manages to kill the vampire leader, causing the remaining vampires to flee. Eben and Stella go off to watch the sunrise together, sharing one last kiss. As the sun comes up, Eben's body burns to ash in Stella's arms. Nicholson, Max (July 23, 2010). Along the way, Hannah surprises herself by coming to care for the people of Húsafjörður. Above all, she bonds with the local policeman’s wife, embarking on an affair that threatens her curmudgeonly façade—and her ability to view the case with clarity. She thinks that she’s found the answer just as a blizzard engulfs the town, but the snow obscures both the truth and her way home. To survive, Hannah has to use all she’s learned in Húsafjörður—about the murderer’s identity and motive; about the value of love and friendship. a b Edward Douglas (March 24, 2006).

When she expresses her contempt for genre fiction, Hanna is publicly challenged to write a crime novel in thirty days. Scared that she will lose face, she accepts, and her editor sends her to Húsafjöður – a quiet, tight-knit village in Iceland, filled with colorful local characters – for inspiration. Though most of the residents head south for the winter, some townspeople remain behind. However, those that stay regret their decision when, one year, hungry vampires descend on Barrow to feed. Sheriff Eben (Josh Hartnett), his wife (Melissa George) and a dwindling band of survivors must try to last until dawn breaks over Barrow's monthlong twilight. A year after the Alaskan town of Barrow's (now Utqiagvik) population was decimated by vampires during its annual month-long polar night, Stella Oleson ( Kiele Sanchez) travels the world trying to convince others that vampires exist. She is fully aware of the risk to her life that her work could bring but does not care due to her grief over the death of her husband, Eben.
