The romance - which was what drew me to the book - is beautiful. It’s cheesy and over the top, but there’s definitely moments that touch the right tones. It goes from fluffy to steamy, but it’s got a tad more angst than I can appreciate. The dual POV also robbed the book of any suspense and made the book sort of frustrating because the reader could brush off each girls doubts immediately.

The highlight of this one, for me, was the resurgence of Monsieur Raymond, who was definitely one of my favorite side characters from the original series, and one I definitely want more of. The brief appearances of Mother Hildegarde are appreciated as well. I can like Joan when I can overlook who her mother is, but that probably isn't quite often enough. The Comte St. Germain.....pffft. I had had more than enough of him in the original storyline, and was pleased to be done with him - not exactly thrilled by his resurgence. I wouldn't mind getting to know Michael better. I certainly have come to adore his brother Ian a great deal, and as he seems closer to Ian than any of his siblings, my interest is piqued. Tyler has a few nice qualities about him but for most of the book, I didn't like him. We come to see the loyalties between people of different classes. How individuals can be convinced that they have conquered the unavoidable distances that money and station can create, and how the removal of that illusion can be an unforgiving destroyer. And how the instinct for self-preservation may be strong, but without the means to preserve oneself, all the intent in the world can mean nothing.
