About this deal

As someone who always seems to guess the ending, I appreciated the way that The Box In The Woods left me guessing the entire time. However, when the big reveal finally came, I was a little disappointed. While it came as a complete surprise, I felt like Johnson didn’t really allow readers to solve the mystery for themselves. While still believable, the ending feels a bit whiplashed because it seemingly comes out of nowhere… like something was happening behind the scenes that readers didn’t get to experience. Oh, good. I can’t let them shut down my lab, not when I’m so close. Soon my creation will come to life!” Adolescent criminals seek the haul of a lifetime in a fantasyland at the beginning of its industrial age. Oh. Okay. I’ll have a... I guess... make it a half pound of that, and a pound of... do you have low-fat Swiss cheese?

The case was never solved. Carson, the new owner, invites Stevie to become a counselor, while also working with him developing a podcast focusing on the murders. Stevie speaks to Paul, who is also sure that Todd ran over Michael. They talk about the murders. Paul says he was with Shawn at the time before he headed to bed. In the third book, The Hand in the Wall, the infamous Ellingham Murders were finally solved by our favorite student sleuth, Stevie Bell.

After solving the case of Truly Devious, Stevie Bell investigates her first mystery outside of Ellingham Academy in this spine-chilling and hilarious stand-alone mystery from New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson. Common Sense is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of all kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in the 21st century. Sabrina wonders whether Patty’s dad is a Nazi. She wonders what happened to his random guest and whether he was killed. She tries ringing him but it doesn’t go through. Sabrina starts researching the Third Reich. The mystery, despite being solved a bit easily, has some interesting twists and is filled with plenty of action. Now she is working at her summer job at charcuterie, cutting cheese in thin pieces, struggling not to fantasize how to kill the customers in 5 million creative ways. The Box in the Woods is separate from the other books, but it's just as juicy and good. It continues with Stevie Bell and her friends solving cases, this time at a summer camp, where 4 teenagers were murdered in the 70s and no one has ever figured out who did it. As with the earlier books in this series, you do get the past perspective played out for you as well. I enjoyed the sections from the past a lot. The story is told with a dual timeline, one part in the present and one in the past at the time of the crimes.

Well, that probably wasn’t true. There might be a lot of places called Camp Wonder Falls. But there was one Camp Wonder Falls that was related to true crime. Up ahead, there's a slightly worse version of the same thing. No need to spend much time here. It'll only get less interesting if you keep thinking about it.Did you know you can flag iffy content? He read about me, what I did at Ellingham. He asked if I wanted a job working there as a counselor. I guess he thought I’d be an interesting addition, you know, something extra for campers. But what then? She had gotten in with the stated purpose of solving the Ellingham case. She’d done that. It was impossible, but she’d done it.

Stevie often references Frances Glessner Lee, an early pioneer in the science of forensics, and examines a book of her Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death, crime scenes duplicated in miniature used to train investigators.A big bold YES! This is the opportunity she’s been looking for. Janelle and Nat already says yes and David hmmm yes he’s always extra annoying who promises to join them later and wants her to keep him updated about events. Not gonna lie, I haven’t read the previous books in this series, even though I’ve been meaning to. I’ve heard good things about them, though, so when I saw this promoted as a standalone, I jumped right on it! Do I think it lives up to that marketing? In a lot of ways, yes. There are enough mentions of what happened in the previous books for me to get the gist of it, and I didn’t feel like I needed more explanation to jump into this one. However, like with most series, I feel like I probably would’ve gotten more out of this book had I known the characters already going into it. The Box in the Woods is a fun murder mystery with a ’80s/’90s slasher vibe going for it. It’s filled with fun characters, plenty of humor, a bit of teen angst, and a mystery that’ll keep you guessing until the end. In 1978 the town has a masive picnic for some big event. America. Patty’s father Arnold speaks to the Mayor, who is Todd’s father. Arnold wonders if the murders are related to Michael’s death from a few months ago. Todd may have run Michael over. In the 1970s, lots of teen pot smoking and dealing, drinking, driving drunk and high. A dad gives teens beers at a pool party. In the present, nothing. David tells Stevie the police have finished up investigating at the scene where Allison fell, so Stevie heads over there.
