About this deal

The Bear and the Nightingale was a finalist for the Locus Award, and Arden received nominations for the John W. Campbell Award. The full trilogy was a finalist for the Hugo Award for Best Series. [3] Synopsis [ edit ] Plot [ edit ] But I never seriously thought I am a writer or even I want to be a writer. Not the kind who writes books you find in a bookstore. I hadn’t made the connection between what I did in my own head for fun and the work of others that I read. KA: Wow, there are so many characters from folklore that I wanted to include but couldn’t! Some of them will make an appearance in future novels. There is a guardian spirit for everything in Russian folklore. The domovoi guards the house; the dvorovoi guards the dooryard. The bannik guards the bathhouse, the ovinnik, the threshing-house. Their areas of influence are almost absurdly specific. And each creature has a certain appearance and personality, and people must do certain things to placate them. BP: The conflict between Christianity and the old traditions is a big part of this book. What do readers need to know about this period in Russian history?

Anna is miserable in her new home. She sees demons everywhere just like she did in Moscow, but here the demons stare at her. She only feels safe in the church. BP: Even though her family sometimes has a hard time understanding Vasya, there is so much love and loyalty in their relationships. What was your favorite relationship in the novel?

Goodreads Summary:

Arden’s debut novel has the cadence of a beautiful fairy tale but is darker and more lyrical.” — The Washington Post The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica. "Leshy Slavic religion". The Bear and the Nightingaleis a marvelous trip into an ancient Russia where magic is a part of everyday life.” —Todd McCaffrey Throughout the novel, Vasya meets many strange creatures from Dunya’s fairy tales—from the domovoi to the rusalka to upyry. Which of the demons that Vasya encounters is your favorite? Which ones would you never want to meet? Vasya's father goes to Moscow to seek a bride, and a bridegroom for his eldest daughter. His son Sasha stays to study for the priesthood. The Rus' ruler takes advantage, offering his 'mad' daughter as wife-- Anna, a pious Christian who sees the spirits and, believing they are demons, shrieks in despair. a b "Katherine Arden Awards". Success!

During this period, much of Muscovy’s conflict was with other Russian city-states (notably Tver), but Dmitrii Ivanovich (who is still a boy in The Bear and the Nightingale) is the first prince who will successfully oppose the Golden Horde and Mongol dominance in Russia. She is not afraid, Konstantin thought dourly. She does not fear God; she fears nothing. He saw it in her silences, her fey glance, the long hours she spent in the forest. In any case, no good Christian maid ever had eyes like that, or walked with such grace in the dark.” Six years later, Vasya is now a mischievous young girl. She gets lost in the woods one evening and doesn’t make it home in time for dinner. The forest changes on her somehow, and she can’t find her way home. She finds a big oak tree with an old man sleeping under it. She wakes him and asks him to help her find her way home. Then another man on a white horse comes in to the clearing. Vasya asks him the same thing. Then he puts the old man to sleep again, which makes her uneasy. Radiant . . . a darkly magical fairy tale for adults, [but] not just for those who love magic.” —Library Journal The horses offer to help teach Vasya how to ride. She really enjoys it. One day when she’s bathing in the forest, she notices Konstantin watching something in the water a little ways down. Vasya saves him. At first, Konstantin doesn’t want to admit that she did so. But then he goes to thank her later. When he touches her hand, Vasya realizes how he gets so many of the women to follow him with his rough skin and beautiful eyes. But she shakes herself out of her reverie.

But Vasya’s stepmother only grows harsher, determined to remake the village to her liking and to groom her rebellious stepdaughter for marriage or a convent. As the village’s defenses weaken and evil from the forest creeps nearer, Vasilisa must call upon dangerous gifts she has long concealed—to protect her family from a threat sprung to life from her nurse’s most frightening tales. I’ll have a story,” said Marina at once. Her tone was light, but her eyes were dark. Dunya gave her a sharp glance. The wind sobbed outside. “Tell the story of Frost, Dunyashka. Tell us of the frost-demon, the winter-king Karachun. He is abroad tonight, and angry at the thaw.”There is a guardian spirit for everything in Russian folklore. I would say there was no moment that definitively told me I wanted to be a writer, rather a series of decisions and outcomes and realizations that cumulatively made me realize that was what I wanted to do with my life. The journey of a female hero is slightly different. First, the female hero must escape domestic imprisonment as a child. She is called to adventure, refusing supernatural aid. She may have to chose between a light and a dark man, searches for a father, and encounters an alternative mother figure. The female hero rejects her inferiority as a woman, and after trials and tests, succeeds in her quest.
