About this deal

These days, the Goddess stops the spread of evil by sacrificing the Island’s rotten teenage souls. Or so the story goes... With this piece, once I got the basic areas done, I then spent time trying to find ways to describe and insinuate the various textures and details with the paint—be it the grooved and weathered bone or the fiddly layers inside the sinus cavities. Simultaneously, I worked to bring more of the sun’s colors into the skull itself.

Here we have the finished piece, which is five inches wide by seven inches tall and is called Summer Sacrifice. In total it was completed in a little over five hours over two days, but could easily have been completed in a single session.

Ancient Chinese The shortest night of the year was as much to be celebrated as the longest day, making the eve of the solstice the pre-drinks of this pagan party. Nowadays it’s common to wake to greet the sunrise on the solstice, but for ancient Pagans it would’ve been an all-night affair, celebrating the sun and welcoming its rise.

I loved the setting. Pity Me School reminded me of an evil Hogwarts and I found a lot of the magical side of the story had touches of Harry Potter about it (which can only be a good thing!) The way in which the Grand Hall was described had me picturing Hogwarts & the caped teachers sitting at the front on a stage. Then there’s the ‘Pity Me Perfects’ who do all of the teachers spying for them and appear where you’d least expect them. Then when one of Jamie’s close friends, Ella, is Taken at Dancing Ledge, even Jamie’s friends Seveny, Max and George start to doubt Jamie’s innocence as she is put on the notorious ‘Gifted and Dangerous’ register at Pity Me. According to certain iterations of the Greek calendar—they varied widely by region and era—the summer solstice was the first day of the year. Several festivals were held around this time, including Kronia, which celebrated the agriculture god Cronus. The strict social code was temporarily turned on its head during Kronia, with slaves participating in the merriment as equals or even being served by their masters. The summer solstice also marked the one-month countdown to the opening of the Olympic games. Ancient Romans It is known by the druids as the Goddess Tree and the Lady of the Woods and is associated with light, new beginnings, love and fertility. It was a tree of enchantment with the power to protect against evil spirits and the evil eye.

On a small Island the inhabitants follow the ritual of the “Taking”, which happens once a month. During the Taking the souls of teenagers are taken by the Goddess so as to stop the spread of evil through sacrifice. Jamie Tuff, the protagonist survives her taking. She thinks that she is safe to live a long and happy life only to find that her soul starts to ‘wander’ into other people’s bodies, and through the ‘wandering’ she discovers that the small island she calls home harbours a deadly secret.
