About this deal

Grace again refers to a weekly poker night, running with his dog, getting into office early and working late, having a role with Police rugby team while supporting Albion. It happens in many countries and sadly our local paper is also full of reports about this too, because there are a lot of big farmhouses in the area, perfect for hiding stolen dogs and illegal breeding. The story in this book could have been set here, not far from my home. A farmer is killed when confronting intruders who complete the successful robbery of some unusual items. Organised criminal gangs have identified a new market and are willing to do what it takes to make money. Roy Grace is determined to stop it. What is more, the writing is excellent, the pace nonstop, the descriptions of Brighton accurate and the minutiae of police procedure is second to none. Peter James is a global bestselling author, best known for writing crime and thriller novels, and the creator of the much-loved Detective Superintendent Roy Grace. With a total of 16 Sunday Times No. 1s under his belt, he has achieved global book sales of over 20 million copies to date and has been translated into 37 languages.

The plot is frightening with many heartbreaking occurrences. The stakes have never been higher for Roy Grace and his committed team of detectives. The race to a result is breathtaking... Careful investigation and planning lead to a nail-biting conclusion and I was on the edge of my seat, seriously worried about more than one of the police team. I know that Peter James does meticulous research for all of his novels but he has excelled himself this time.Stop Them Dead" by Peter James delivers another thrilling addition to the acclaimed Grace series that will leave you on the edge of your seat. Set in a world where darkness lurks at every turn, this book plunges readers into a heart-pounding race against time. When a seemingly routine confrontation turns deadly for a young farmer, the story takes an ominous twist. Detective Superintendent Roy Grace uncovers a sinister underbelly of crime beyond the initial robbery, revealing a nationwide wave of illegal dog trade controlled by ruthless organized gangs. The range of different crimes covered are nothing new, but the way in which they are all brought together is done well and is a timely reminder to people about some of the dubious practises criminals are involved in. We see the myriad of ways in which the unsuspecting and trusting public can be conned. Grace’s investigation into this deadly trade pits him against some of the most ruthless people he has ever encountered; people who will kill anyone who gets in their way, because where there is greed, there is murder. The story is told in the typical Grace style, racing through the revelations and trying to stop anything else happening before its too late. The usual crew of Branson, E-J and Potting are there, along with some new faces who hopefully will feature in future stories.

The style rarely moves away from sounding like a report except where it sounds like a newspaper article. Never happy when a real life person supposedly interacts with the fictional. Not likely to be responsible for the outcome of treatment because the patient lives in the imagination of the author. So filler.

The minor, but centrally placed, comical thief is switched off long before end. He has nothing to do with the murders. His shop thieving is totally irrelevant and his appearance at the Amex just stretches the word count. Why do we need to hear about Norman's social life? Grace and Branson head out to investigate and realise the stolen dogs were worth several thousand pounds.

Discover the darkness that lurks around every corner in the latest instalment of the award-winning Grace series, now a major BRITBOX series. These criminal masterminds are ruthless and don't stop at murder when a farmer confronts intruders about to steal five puppies and the parent dogs - and pays with his life... I will honour the author’s desire for surprise and not mention what this new market actually is, even if it’s difficult to write a review without identifying it. Suffice to say that I was incredibly impressed by the author’s research and the easy way he makes all the pitfalls and the most extreme consequences realistic. This novel is not a wake up call, it’s a howling klaxon. This is book 19 but can easily be read as a standalone. I love Peter James and his Roy Grace series, it is a must read for me personally. The plots are always current and the authors research make me feel like I’m actually reading real life not fiction. The dark crime and the sinister criminals are the main focus but the police teamwork/procedures and the glimpses into life outside the station make this a totally enjoyable and engrossing read. As always there’s a glossary at the end with all the police terminology. The book topic is illegal dog trade and I hope it helps raise awareness.I would like to thank Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for an advance copy of Stop Them Dead, the nineteenth novel to feature Detective Superintendent Roy Grace of Sussex Police. When a woman linked to the farm they’ve been monitoring is killed in a road accident it soon comes to light that it was not an accident.

I could not put this book down. The subject matter of puppy farming and dog theft is very upsetting but was treated as sensitively as possible and really brings home the horror of this disgusting trade and how innocent people are caught up in it. Discover the darkness that lurks around every corner in the latest instalment of the award-winning Grace series, now a major ITV series. I've read and enjoyed many (but not all) of the previous "Roy Grace" novels, and this was no exception. The plotting and writing are spot on as usual, and the characters and dialogue are very believable. There is no tension. Nothing is nail biting. Too much is included that does not move the murder story and does no more than explain the plight of puppies farmed without care who do not appear to get their happy ending.
