Bridges | Steve Lukather

a b c d e f Lukather, Steve (April 29, 2011). "Adult Chords". Bill Murphy Show (Interview). Interviewed by Bill Murphy . Retrieved March 6, 2012. In 1998, Lukather received an invitation to tour Japan with fellow guitarist Larry Carlton after Japanese promoters requested that Carlton's annual tours each be different from the last. Lukather and Carlton exchanged some recorded material and decided that a collaboration would be interesting. Lukather was flattered by the invitation to tour with Carlton, citing him as his favorite guitarist. Lukather speaks highly of their stage efforts, although the two were admittedly outside their normal realm of work. He stated in an interview that "you can hear us having fun on the record—you can hear the smiles on our faces." [43] After several shows, the duo realized that they should record their collaboration even if just for their own use. Guitarist and producer Steve Vai heard one of the subsequent recordings and expressed interest in releasing it under his Favored Nations label, also home to such artists as Eric Johnson and Dweezil Zappa. Vai and Lukather mixed and produced the recording, which is said to be a mixture of jazz, blues, and fusion music. [43] The resulting album, No Substitutions: Live in Osaka, won a 2001 Grammy award for Best Pop Instrumental Album. [10] [44] Album reviewers described Lukather as having a heavier style than Carlton. [45] Lukather and Carlton later did an international tour in support of the album. [43] I see it as a bridge between my solo music and Toto Music,” Steve Lukather told us. “The fact that Joseph Williams, David Paich and I wrote most of the record, and the fact I invited many of the old Toto gang to come and play, co-writers like Randy Goodrum and Stan Lynch brings all this together.

It also proves that most of my old pals and I are still great friends, and I wanted to do a record ‘in the style of,’ as Toto will never record another studio album. This is as close as we will get. We still love writing and creating, and recording together, and we will no doubt continue to work with each other on our respective solo works. It’s complicated, and at the age I am now, I do NOT wish to do anything complicated.” When I See You Again’ is catchy if a bit underwhelming and an obvious contender for the label “Toto out-take” which probably explains its early single status. I give them ideas of what I wanna say and they articulate my feelings into the music, and then perhaps once I see their first drafts we talk about it, edit here and there, and the end result is what we have on this record.” Sprague, David (June 22, 2005), "Les Paul 90th Birthday Salute", Daily Variety, vol.287, no.58, p.5, ISSN 0011-5509
