About this deal

The 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art flanked by the 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art (right) and the 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art (left) This lens has been designed using an advanced optical structure to achieve both high resolution and sharpness along with an aesthetic out-of-focus quality for greater subject separation. A molded glass aspherical element corrects for sagittal coma flare and enables full use of the fast f/1.4 maximum aperture with maintained sharpness and clarity. This design also works to minimize vignetting, color blur, and other distortions help to produce natural and pleasing bokeh for selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques. By reducing these aberrations, this lens is also well-suited to astrophotography or other situations with point-light sources due to its ability to suppress blur near the edges of the frame. Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Review - Photography Life

The blue column represents readings from the centre of the picture frame at the various apertures and the green is from the edges. Averaging them out gives the red weighted column. Large-aperture lenses are prone to reduced peripheral brightness. In this lens, we have made the forward lens group large-aperture, thereby raising aperture efficiency. The result is minimal reduction of brightness at the image periphery and even image quality throughout the photograph. Even at the wide-open aperture, you can shoot a blue sky without fear of reduced brightness and achieve a beautiful bokeh effect at the same time. The scale on the left side is an indication of actual image resolution. The taller the column, the better the lens performance. Simple. I wrongly thought that if there was so small an angle between infinity and the 3m marked distance, it was because there was almost no room for change when travelling from 3m to infinity. I understood something like : "Beyond 3m or so, it's (almost) the same. So why bother having a long distance scale in that range, it won't help/improve things". Ok, the first shot was the Canon and the second shot was the new Sigma. Web sized like the two images above are, it is hard to tell which is which right off the bat. My initial thoughts though are that the Canon’s bokeh is slightly more appealing, the Sigma’s seems to be a hair more “busy” but overall they are very similar. [REWIND: My Initial Thoughts & Unboxing Of The Sigma 50mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art]in our day and age i see no reason to even consider a manual focus lens unless you are on a ridiculously tight budget or you prefer to do things the hard way. Whereas Sigma’s ‘Contemporary’ lenses are designed to be relatively compact and lightweight, the ‘Art’ lenses in the Global Vision line-up are less compromising. They aim to deliver the highest standards of image quality to suit the most demanding creative photographers. This 50mm prime has a particularly complex optical layout for a ‘nifty fifty’, based on no less than 14 elements in 11 groups. The layout include three aspherical elements and one SLD (Special Low Dispersion) element, with the overall aim of enhancing color rendition, contrast and edge-to-edge sharpness while minimizing aberrations that include sagittal coma, astigmatism and field curvature. On the side of the barrel of each lens, there is a switch to jump between AF and MF. The RF lens also has an additional switch to limit the focus distance. A world that I’d love to shrink myself into, just to walk underneath petals of clover or to find shelter from the rain underneath the cap of a minuscule mushroom. My photos let me escape into that world and a good lens makes it even more realistic, because it detects so much more than the human eye can see: the 50mm F1.4 DG DN | Art is a lens, that captures that world so vividly.

Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art review | Cameralabs

Photography is more often about just being in the right place at the right time. The image above captures Folkestone harbour at the right time, towards the end of day as the clouds glow with the remnants last light. The SIGMA 50mm F1.4 DG DN | Art was the right lens needed to capture this moment.I will continue to work at the micro adjustments in the hope of getting something better out of the lens. Unlike the virtually distortion-free DG lens, the DN edition gives a level of pincushion distortion which can be rather noticeable when disabling in-camera correction. Reliance on auto correction has become increasingly common in recent lenses designed for mirrorless cameras. Verdict This lens feature Sigma's HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) technology. This system ensures quiet and fast autofocus yet, you also have full-time manual focus override accessed by simply rotating the focus ring. Sigma's enhanced autofocus system, you're able to get a much smoother autofocus experience. Designed to be robust and durable The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art is a lens that delivers outstanding performance at a reasonable price.
