About this deal

Really liked it, the art carrying a melancholic feel but also a bright atmosphere as well. Perfect for this kind of story. I hope the anime adaptation does just as well on that. In Japanese print, the series totals ten chapters across two tankobon volumes. In English, the ten chapters are collected into one "all-in-one" volume: I Want to Eat Your Pancreas: The Complete Manga Collection.

I want to clear this up first. You may want to know why the title of this manga is like a horror manga title. For that, I must take a little extract from the manga/novel: I started reading this manga without reading the synopsis first knowing that it is well known for a reason, not knowing what to expect. A few chapters later then I remembered seeing people talking about how the anime makes them cry. Of course I didn't expect myself to even be giving in to that.

Seeing the general success of melodrama stories involving some kind of illness or handicap (not just in anime or manga but in media general) makes me wonder, could it be that they are so greatly received simply because people would feel bad not rating it super high, like not doing that would feel like they are being mean towards the poor patients? Well, not that I can fault the work itself for such overreaction of course, unless it’s deliberately exploiting this. This manga has taught me a lot about self improvement! The courage touch society again! And most importantly, to love...! Having a pancreatic disease, Sakura had a little time in this beautiful world. Although Haruki & Sakura both were classmates, they were like strangers. Suddenly, they came to know each other through the library committee. She used to mix with him by force as Haruki seemed to be shut up. One day in the corridor of a hospital he found a diary telling about a disease which was Sakura's. That's how Haruki gets to know about her little life. He was the only one outside the family who knew that bad news. Sakura was given advice that she should spend time on those things she really wanted to do. Then, she started to do so according to the advisor, Haruki. Both of them made great effects on their life. He got to know the real meaning of life. I Want to Eat Your Pancreas seems like, at first, just another doomed romance. Boy meets terminally ill girl. Girl changes boy's worldview, or vice versa. Boy and girl fall in love. Girl passes away, leaving boy brokenhearted, but better for the time they shared.

If someone in the past had a part of their body that wasn’t well, they would eat the corresponding part of another animal.” - Sakura It's original and it's honest. I Want to Eat Your Pancreas will certainly tug at your heart strings. I did not cry at this one but it did make my heart swell to double its size. It's one of those books that you finish, put down, and then sit in silent reflection for a few minutes before you're able to move on.EditSynopsis A high school boy finds the diary of his classmate—only to discover that she's dying. Sakura Yamauchi has been silently suffering from a pancreatic disease, and now exactly one person outside her family knows. He swears to her that he won't tell anyone what he learned, and the shared secret brings them closer together in this deeply moving, first-person story that traces their developing relationship in Sakura's final months of life. She sometimes teases about becoming romantic with him and it confuses him to no end. But the romance part is not the important part. Their friendship and their trust is what matters. They have something that goes far beyond first kisses. For context, I think it needs to be mentioned that I don't cry over books that often. As a result, some weird part of me seeks out all the 'tear-jerker' media I can get my hands on to see if it 'works' on me. (Typing this out makes me seem like even more of a weirdo than I already am/have accepted I am. If you're concerned, don't worry, because I'm concerned too.) In this deeply moving first-person story, an introverted high school boy finds his classmate’s diary―and learns her biggest secret. Sakura Yamauchi is dying from a pancreatic disease and now he is the only one person outside her family to know the truth. The last thing the boy wants is to be her friend, but Sakura’s cheerful demeanor and their shared secret draw them together in this heartrending tale of friendship and mortality. The centre of the story, she is a merry girl who has many friends but chooses to hang out with the boy. The girl's determination to spend her days as happily as possible to create joyful memories of her last days surprised me a lot. She is almost always presented as a cheerful girl who seems to take the idea of death lightly (she often uses her death as an excuse when annoying the boy, which is quite funny.). But at the same time we are also shown indications that she is worried. I don't know how to convey this feeling but whenever she mentioned the word "death" I felt like my heart was about to stop. I questioned myself a lot, why can't this brave girl be spared from this disease? Honestly, Sakura had a really big impression on me after I finished reading the story. Well, you see, right when the writing has been going from the “alright” to the “meh” territory and I was contemplating whether to rate this 5 or 6, the finale came around. Ironically, I’d say it was thanks to the novel being so self-aware about how everyone saw the conclusion of terminal illness coming. Thanks to confessing right from the start what is going to happen the story was able to go a bit further than being just a generic final moments of a patient melodrama. A finale that was surprisingly nicely executed with well done emotional pay-off. Now, as much as I would love to write in greater detail about it, I would also like to not rob you of the opportunity to experience it first-hand, so you’ll have to be satisfied with me not spelling everything out. What’s important is that I was suddenly contemplating not between 5 or 6, but between 6 or 7. And I’m possibly getting soft as “good” it is. There, I didn’t completely trash a mostly sentimental piece of fiction, save your booing for later. I'll say this right now the story, character, and art are superb. I firmly enjoyed this story...until a certain point. I won't give direct spoilers but the writers ruined the story with aKeep in mind that at the point of writing this review, I have yet to see the movie, so however well the adaptation performed, it bears no influence on my evaluation of the novel. I always thought I am enough and I will never need to know another person. And you gave me reasons why I need to know someone I can rely on. You will always be remembered. Hope you and my darling cats are enjoying there. You went away on the same day for me. Hope you stay together for long, comfort my kitties when they remember me. When you cry, they will stay and comfort you too. They are very good at that. Stay warm. From the title, I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, you may think that this is a Marvel comic book about Venom. Alas, it is something completely different. A beautifully touching manga about a dying girl and a true friend.
