About this deal

Staying in Character: Character Builds for D&D 5e, Pathfinder 2E, and Starfinder from Popular Culture I thought I had a great word cue to give for the green color I chose. But when I found it on the board and saw the huge variety of hues around it, my mind started scrambling for how my cue would be interpreted. Would it be descriptive enough? Should your piece be inside the scoring frame but is not the exact color, you will receive two points for it. Once everyone has placed their first pawn, the first player then optionally gives a second clue, which now can be up to two words. Then everyone places their second pawn based on the second clue. Once everyone has placed their second pawn everyone scores points. The Cue-giver draws a card which has four colors on it. Each of the colors corresponds to a color on the gameboard, which is essentially a gigantic grid of beautiful colors. They choose one of the colors and provide a one-word cue about that color. The one area where we’ve deviated from the game rules is having all players draw cards at the outset. Since the tough part (and most time-consuming part) of the game is coming up with the cues. By letting players have a card in hand long before their turns, they can be thinking of their potential cues before their turn comes. And that’s helped the games flow more smoothly.

Wow! Kudos. So given that this is your first game, and that you seem to have nailed it, what advice would you give to other full-time humans? And part-time game inventors? You might also consider allowing two-word clues right from the start, or even allowing a longer description. Again, it’s really up to you and what will make it the most fun for whoever is playing. It really is okay to adapt the rules when you need to… after all, it’s just a game! Some things to consider Well… It’s been argued that writing things down is the most-important process! So is Hues and Cues your only game? Or have I missed some?

Teachers can get creative with different ways to use this color game as a center during rotations. One idea would be to open the game board and post some cues for the colors you want students to guess. Then write down their coordinates and keep them a secret! Now I know some other people (my podcast co-host for one) think this difficulty in coming up with good cues is a feature of the game and not at all an issue. So it seems this difficulty in coming up with cues is going to be group dependent, with some people being faster at it than others. Even I don’t really think it’s a problem with the game, just something to think about when deciding to play as it can make the game significantly longer than the time on the box. If there is a tie, you will play additional rounds until one of the tied players take the lead by themselves. In these additional rounds the tied players cannot be the cue giver.

I think it’s natural for someone to assume a person who experiences some type of colour blindness can’t play a game about colour. Hues and Cues is most likely the only colour-based game which can be played by those with a colour deficiency without additional symbology or other assistance. So if I select the color K14, I might say “beach” because the color reminds me of a beachy blue. The players guessing will then take one of their pawns and place it on top of a color on the board they think best represents “Beach.”

Sign in or Create an Account Overall, we think Hues and Cues is a middle of the road but ultimately enjoyable party game. If you are searching for an activity to fit your non-gaming friends who prefer to chill and converse over a game, Hues and Cues is a good fit. Allowing for up to ten to play makes this a good choice for large groups, especially those with a large variety in ages amongst players. Yes, that worked for me. My ideas for the game came to me at the oddest times. In the shower or during twilight sleep while trying to wake up in the morning. For every hour I spent actively working on the game itself, I easily had it in my head four times as much just thinking through different aspects and possibilities.Hues And Cues is a party game by The Op. This is a game all about different colours – it’s like looking through a range of named paints! It’s a competitive game, where everyone’s playing against one another, trying to score the most points. But you need to help your opponents out sometimes. You’ll give out clever clues and word associations, that help both you and them! To make the game easier for younger players, you can choose to use a variant rule. Instead of drawing a card, the players will choose any color they want from the gameboard. This allows players to choose a color that they can give better cues for. The player should write down the coordinates of the color they chose. One-Word Cue Dicebreaker is owned by Gamer Network Limited, a ReedPop company and subsidiary of Reed Exhibitions Limited. Hues and Cues is one of those games where I can’t help but wonder what took so long? The basic concept is so simple, straight forward and elegant that it’s hard to imagine that it took this long for someone to formalize it into a game.

Hues and Cues exists firmly in the same world as a game like Dixit. It’s easy to jump in and play. It’s also easy to learn and accommodates a huge number of players. But for me, Dixit requires more of a storytelling brain. You have to interpret a picture and you can choose to give a short clue but you can open it up to a whole paragraph if you want. There are lots of different shades of all varieties to try to differentiate between. Playing Hues and Cues doesn’t require a big time commitment…. it doesn’t drag on or take hours to play. (I’m looking at you, Monopoly!) Ways to play A color game for ‘Family Game Night’ At this point the players will compare their scores. The player that has scored the most points wins the game. The green player scored the most points in the game. Therefore the green player has won the game. Of course, that’s assuming we’re both talking about the same shade of an apple to start with. A number of board-game reviewers and designers with colour deficiencies have given it their thumbs-up – and their win and lose record is the same as any other player.

How does Hues and Cues score on our “Let’s Play Again” game meter?

This is because the Cue-giver gets a point for every marker within the interior boundaries of the scoring rig. This is a maximum of nine points. If the maximum number of points a guesser can get is 3 points with a single marker, initiating the scoring after a single cue can limit the points gained by the other players. Once I had a game our family enjoyed, I had a more professional copy of the board made at Fed Ex. We took the game to our weekly game nights where typically 30 or so people attend. These are gaming friends who wouldn’t be afraid to really tell us what they thought. I was very nervous to make it public, but did so at the insistence of my wife. I’m glad I did because it was those friends who really got excited and encouraged me to show it to some of our industry friends. Months later, I took my one copy to Geekway to the West… Overall, Hues and Cues is a fun, light-hearted game that helps you appreciate the colors that you might see every day. It’s not something that I’ll play frequently, but it will hold a well-deserved place on the shelf for occasions where a simple game is called for. This art-based game will be equally at home in an art classroom, or any classroom. In the Art Room, it makes a great extension activity after a color mixing lesson like my Create Your Own Color Wheel or Mix 100 Colors (both available in my TPT Store). Party games kind of exist in a few different spheres. But one of the recently popular is the clue-giver and everyone else guesses style of games. Dixit is maybe the original where players try to describe the art on a card with a phrase of story. Codenames exploded onto the scene with its team-based vocabulary version.
