Teresa Fava Thomas, Ph.D. is a professor of history at Fitchburg State University and author of American Arabists in the Cold War Middle East, 1946-75: From Orientalism to Professionalism for Anthem Press. I became interested in people who became area experts for the US State Department and how their study of hard languages like Arabic shaped their interactions with people in the region. Hostage begins with three young men robbing a convenience store and killing the owner. While hiding from the police, they invaded a private residence and took the family hostage. What they don't know was that they had invaded the home of the accountant for an organized crime boss. Hostage is the tale of several hostage situations. The Smith family are held hostage by Dennis Rooney and the gang after their robbery, Jeff Talley is held hostage by his own past, and... well, I hold off on mentioning the hostage situation in the book.

The premise for this book is probably cliché in this day and age (and the movie based on this couldn't touch the emotion of the book)but when I first read this, I couldn't put it down. When Talley is the focus, you can't help but feel for him, he didn't want this situation and it's made worse when his family become involved. On the other hand, the thugs in the house are realistic, threatening and evil, something many authors fail to do. Released before hoodies were a thing of subculture, this book really lives up to the title thriller and you never know what will happen next. The three take refuge in the house, holding a father and his two children hostage. Before long, they are totally surrounded and their chances of getting away safely are nil. If that weren't bad enough, it turns out that the house they have broken into belongs to the accountant for a major mob of criminals. There's over a million dollars in cash in the house. Even more important, there are also computer discs with records that could bring down several major figures in the mob.

There is discussion of adoption and the challenges of raising a difficult child who doesn’t quite fit well in an average school setting. Much like with Demolition Angel, I have to admit that I was skeptical about Hostage, one of Robert Crais' standalone books. Like with Demolition Angel, I had nothing to worry about. Time apart sounds like the perfect way for both to think about their marriage, but unfortunately, the time they spend away from each other will be filled with each thinking about survival.I supplemented with the audio. Note re the audiobook: WHY would one narrator be used for all the different POV? It was impossible to tell whose POV I was listening to. I huge FAIL. Is it me or did Sophia escape way too easily? When the fire started in the house I had no idea how Adam and Sophia would escape. But it turned out there was an easy way out?! Why on earth did they not get Sophia out earlier?! Bottom line this is an exciting experience, not quite as good as Falling in terms of action, but a slight edge with the complexity of the characterization. the kid hit the dad on the head, hes unconscious. the third boy, max, theres something wrong with him, psyco. the brother of the girl in the house got her cell phone and managed to make a call to the police but had to hang up For more than a month, Fung lived in that hole, which was barely tall enough to stand up in, nursing her injuries, praying and writing in a notebook. Under an Afghan Sky is the gripping tale of Fung’s…

The FBI was charged with investigating the murders and Federal agents tried to come in to resolve the situation, and I headed up the negotiations during the siege. For the first 26 days my negotiation team got 35 people out, including 21 children. And then, in a sort of controversial aspect of this, the FBI decided to take a more aggressive approach during the second half of the ordeal and no one else came out. Some tear gas was inserted on the 52nd day and the Davidians started fires and essentially committed mass suicide. Some injuries and deaths occur. The terrified passengers become aware of what is unfolding and that they are all doomed. It added a dimension to the story that we got to know some of the individual passengers through their thoughts about their lives and why they took this inaugural flight to Sydney. The atmosphere on board the first non-stop flight from London to Sydney is electric. Celebrities are rumoured to be among the passengers in business class, and the world is watching the landmark journey. I've read and enjoyed every book by this author. No exception here. It's a dramatic thriller, full of moral dilemmas and danger - can't ask for more than that! Pacey read, interesting and complex characters, and a unique scenario.Hostage is 1 of 4 similarly themed novels (that I’m aware of) touching ground this summer, and the 3rd (and last) one I read. It is also about a couple who have adopted a daughter with her own issues and precocious intellect. In many ways it is two stories in one. This is the 4th book that I’ve read from this author and I have enjoyed them all. There were several things that I really loved about this book.
