About this deal

Bloodline is much of the same – it has a slightly more active surround expansion (likely due to its more mid-90s approach to such things) and it does go a touch deeper with its sound effects (space will tend to do that…) but its very much of an audio piece with its brethren: technically well done but more of a perfunctory original mix than an exercise in audio audacity. Loaded with special features, Hellraiser Quartet of Torment is released on 4K blu-ray on 23rd October and will surely thrill genre horror completionists. The Pursuit of Possibilities – A brand new 40 minute discussion between horror authors Paula D. Ashe and Eric LaRocca talking about the queer nature of Hellraiser and the work of Clive Barker. Hearing how LaRocca and Ashe felt discovered by Hellraiser is a really beautiful thing and they both bring up some very interesting points in regards to queer subtext in his work. A fantastic bonus feature. But the return of Barker to being a much more active participant in the fourth film, Hellraiser: Bloodline, promised much…an anthology structure across multiple timelines to explore the origins of the box (now wonderfully known as The Lament Configuration). Yet its strangled production and sadly typical studio interference gutted a lot of what could have been, leaving an interesting but hugely flawed curio that remains to this day the last Hellraiser film to see the inside of a cinema… The Beauty of Suffering – brand new featurette exploring the Cenobites’ connection to goth, fetish cultures and Bdsm

That Rat-Slice Sound - brand new appreciation of composer Christopher Young’s scores for Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser Ii by Guy AdamsThat Rat-Slice Sound, a brand new appreciation of composer Christopher Young’s scores for Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II by film critic and author Guy Adams Hell Was What They Wanted! - brand new 80-minute appreciation of Hellbound, the Hellraiser mythos and the work of Clive Barker by horror authors George Daniel Lea (Born in Blood) and Kit Power (The Finite) Archival audio commentary with writer/director Clive Barker and actor Ashley Laurence, moderated by Peter Atkins

That’s the general gist, but there’s a lot more going on in the film than gnarly, disturbing gore and one of my favourite elements of the feature is actually how Barker gives the majority of the screen to a well-written and established female antagonist, which felt refreshing at the time the film released. Larry’s daughter Kirsty is the heart of the film and its sequel, and helped Ashley Laurence become a mainstay in the cult horror scene. Horror, Thriller | UK/USA 1987, 1988, 1992, 1996 | 18 | 23rd October 2023 (UK) | 4K UHD | Arrow Video Resulting in Pinhead once again being awakened and Kirsty being pulled into hell to stop his evil plan.

Scores

Hellbound: Hellraiser Ii expands on Barker's original vision as screenwriter Peter Atkins takes Julia Cotton, her step daughter Kirsty (Ashley Laurence) and the sinister Dr. Channard (Kenneth Cranham) into the dominion of the Cenobites themselves. Hellraiser Iii: Hell on Earth sees Pinhead set loose on the sinful streets of New York City to create chaos with a fresh cadre of Cenobitic kin. Then, Hellraiser: Bloodline sinks its hooks into past, present and future with the story of Phillip LeMarchand, the 18th-century toymaker who made the lament configuration puzzle box, his descendent John Merchant - a 20th-century architect whose most recent building bears a striking resemblance to the lament configuration - and Dr. Paul Merchant, a 22nd-century engineer and designer of The Minos, a space station which is a great deal more than it seems. Behind the scenes footage – 2 minutes of behind the scenes footage from the film shoot. It’s a neat inclusion.

Books of Blood and Beyond: The Literary Works of Clive Barker – An archival 20 minute appreciation by David Gatwalk of Barker’s written work. This was included on previous Arrow Video releases and it’s a decent watch. Gatwalk talks about how love for the work of Barker and is enthusiastic about the work, which makes the featurette a fun watch. Newly uncovered workprint version of the film, providing a fascinating insight into how it changed during post production A more contained story than what was to come, it followed a family; Larry ( Andrew Robinson), his wife, Julia ( Clare Higgins) and their daughter Kirsty (Ashley Laurence) as their family gets torn apart (quite literally in some cases) by lust, obsession and murder. It was of course the first appearance of Pinhead ( Doug Bradley) who was to become a horror icon, standing alongside the likes of Jason Voorhes and Freddy Kreuger.Under the Skin: Doug Bradley on Hellbound - archival interview with the iconic actor about his second appearance as 'Pinhead'

That Rat-Slice Sound - brand new appreciation of composer Christopher Young's scores for Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser Ii by Guy Adams Being Frank: Sean Chapman on Hellbound - archival interview about the actor’s return to the role of Frank Cotton As it stands, Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth is an okay sequel that isn’t really my thing, but has enough for fans of the franchise or Doug Bradley’s Pinhead in particular to enjoy. As long as you don’t go in expecting something on the same level as those first two instalments, you might have a good time with this one.

The Pursuit of Possibilities – brand new 60-minute discussion between acclaimed horror authors Paula D. Ashe (We Are Here To Hurt Each Other) and Eric LaRocca (Everything the Dark Eats) celebrating the queerness of Hellraiser and the importance of Clive Barker as a queer writer And so the sequel, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, was rushed into production during the finalisation of the first film and released barely twelve months after. Problems plagued the hastily assembled production, from actors refusing to return forcing script rewrites, to financial problems with production company New World Pictures, the final film is a scruffy, messy expansion of the first that still manages to offer up some stunning designs and scenes and a delicious peak into the mythos of the Cenobites and of Hell itself. As mentioned above, it’s structured differently to the final released version of the film, but the new footage doesn’t improve the film very much, in my opinion. It’s a fascinating look into what Yagher might have been trying to do and props to Arrow for including it. Also included is five minutes of alternate footage, sourced from an earlier workprint without music or special effects that features more exclusive material. It’s a great treat for fans of the franchise and lost media. The Beauty of Suffering, a brand new featurette exploring the Cenobites connection to goth, fetish cultures and BDSM Under the Skin: Doug Bradley on Hellraiser III – archival interview with the iconic actor about his third appearance as ‘Pinhead’
