If you’re concerned about noise, look for an electronic toothbrush that runs quietly. Some models are naturally more noisy than others. Whilst you need to launch the app each time to use it the brush itself can store the data for up to 20 cleans meaning you do not need to always have the app to hand.

The 8000 and all Oral-B brushes made for the UK come with a 2 pin connector on the charging cables. This is because they have been designed to be used with power outlets found in bathrooms that use a 2 pin configuration. A fully sealed brush it can be used in the shower, rinsed off under a tap etc without issue. Don’t go taking the brush for a swim, but it is designed to resist water. What’s more, it delivers an excellent clean, with three modes – Sensitive, Daily Clean and Whitening – that take you all the way from a softer brush that’s easy on the gums to a more intense polish that should help get rid of staining. Battery life, meanwhile, is exceptional; you’ll easily get through two weeks of brushing and probably three without a recharge. It’s the king of sensibly priced brushes and one of the easiest recommendations in the Oral-B range. Frequent travellers may demand longer battery life and if this is a must take a look at Philips Sonicare DiamondClean, but if 16 days is ample then great.Even for me, even as someone writing about toothbrushes, I find it hard work and difficult to make set up the smartphone in the holder with the app, a bit of a chore and although it may take 15-30 seconds, that's around 25% of the time I would spend cleaning my teeth.

Now you may be thinking that many other brushes from Oral-B or other brands comes with such. Which is fair, but where the 8000 comes into its own needs a little more explanation. To get going and start using the brush you need to press the power button (the one at the top) and to turn it off for 2 seconds to turn the brush off. The button requires a firm push, meaning it is difficult to accidentally power on or off. The app will run on most Android or iOS devices. And uses Bluetooth on your phone and the 8000 brush to pair. Your smartphone must have Bluetooth 4.0 as a minimum for compatibility.

Battery life– Still not perfect or as good as Philips, the extra 2 days of usage time compared to the Pro 6000 makes the Genius more compelling with a total of up to 12 days battery power. Thus the built-in pressure sensor that includes a visible red light is a great way of understanding if you are applying too much pressure. Particularly useful if you have not had one before and do not know how much pressure to apply. The app is very comprehensive with lots of options, too many to go through completely in this review. It gives you all you need though to not only effectively brush your teeth, but to log the cleans and motivate you. The three settings are easy to switch between and the sensitivity option is especially good at lowering the intensity while still feeling effective (the misuse of powerful electric toothbrushes can, after all, be a cause of gum recession). Its high-frequency sonic oscillation also means that toothpaste and oxygen are delivered to even the most inaccessible places for a deeper clean.
