About this deal

Derwent Chromaflow Colored Pencils Tin, Set of 72, Great for Holiday Gifts, 4mm Wide Core, Multicolor, Smooth Texture, Art Supplies for Drawing, Blending, Sketching, Professional Quality (2306014) But don't let this minor hitch deter you! This issue typically comes up only when you're heavily diluting the colours. Even then, it's not a common problem. When you're using these pencils in their dry form, and then adding water to your paper, you're more than likely to be just fine. One thing to keep in mind The alternative, if you have a full set of Coloursoft, is to remove the few low lightfast colours from the Coloursoft set and amalgamate all the good lightfast colours (118 at my count) to make one excellent set. One thing that is notable between the pencils is the look and feel of the pencils themselves. The Chromaflow are definitely thinner and lighter due to the size of the barrel and the type of wood used in manufacturing but this does not affect the quality of the cores. A note about lightfastness Where I think this product would benefit someone new to coloured pencil is as a practice pencil. I also think that given the nature of the breakage I experienced I would caution anyone who wanted to use these for a larger drawing as you won’t be able to replace used-up pencils without purchasing a whole new set.

Derwent Chromaflow Review - Barb Sotiropoulos Derwent Chromaflow Review - Barb Sotiropoulos

I love that the Drawing and the Lightfast have a crossover of colour names so you can utilise say the Mars Violet (another fave) in the Drawing range for the underpainting of a piece and then use the Lightfast one to add details. Derwent Chromaflow There is a range of 24 colours. When dry colour is applied they are all shades of grey. The colour only really comes out when water is applied. I would strongly recommend doing tests on different paper swatches before you try a full piece with any new pencil. The combination of the type of paper you use with any coloured pencil product can greatly affect your success with it. Often it takes a bit of time to find the right combination of paper and pencil with the techniques you like using to get successful results. These are water soluble pencils which erase as a dry medium, but once water is applied they are permanent on the paper.

I love to use these in my animal portraits to help speed up the initial laydown of pigment, especially when working on a textured support. They are opaque but soft and my other ranges then glide beautifully over them when used as a base. You can also use them on their own but it is slightly more difficult to get fine details because of the width of the core. That is when I will turn to one of the other ranges. Derwent Lightfast I think it fair to say that these fit into a logical slot as a softer version of the Artists/Studio pencil. Derwent seem to be standardising on sets of 72 colours which will enable them to market pencils in standard sized tins and boxes. For the serious artist, this may reduce the colour choice if the older lines are totally withdrawn, as the main competitors are selling sets up to 120 colours in the range. Accessories to consider They work well with most erasers, they worked particularly well with the following Derwent erasers: Discover the best colored pencils for artists that bring out vibrant, professional-quality results, with this simple test.

Derwent Chromaflow Pencil Tins contain a selection of soft, creamy textured, wax-based coloured pencils in a balanced spectrum of colours. Learn about the caran d'ache range of artists coloured pencils and watercolour pencils from Switzerland Next I completed a series of tests, layering, the use of odourless mineral spirits and blending. First, with the layering test. I complete this test all the time, holding the pencil at the very end of the barrel and allowing the weight of the pencil to layer, this test helps to shoe pigment strength and the pencils ability to layer. The two issues I had with this style of marketing were as follows, if the Chromaflow were to be a replacement or at least near as dam it replacement to the Prismacolor for UK based colored pencil artists, why release them first in the US, when they are supposed to fill a gap in the UK market? My second issue was, if you are going to try and fill in for a product that sports a palette of 150, surely releasing only sets of 12 and 24 is way off the mark. Derwent Chromaflow pencils provide artists with an affordable professional quality product which is easy to layer and blend thanks to the richly pigmented smooth texture, providing a velvety laydown.

There are many pencils available in the Derwent ranges but for this feature I want to focus on the three that I use most within my own work – Derwent’s Drawing, Lightfast & Chromaflow pencils. This doesn’t mean that I don’t also utilise some of the others not mentioned here in my work when I am looking for a specific application but these are more my ‘go to’ pencils.

A look at the coloured pencil brands available in the UK. How they differ and how lightfast they are. Derwent released a new line of coloured pencils called Chromaflow in the Spring of 2021. As a relatively big fan of Derwent products, I was curious to try these pencils for myself. There seemed to be a lot of anticipation amongst coloured pencil artists for them, but who are they really best for and do they live up to the hype? The Derwent Chromaflow are one such pencil that are aimed toward those of use who just love drawing, adult colouring book artists, crafters, people like myself who love to use colored pencils and then slip the work into a wallet never to see the light of day again. Derwent Chromaflow Price Developing many layers, even on hot pressed paper, is simple, and burnishing the top layers will result in a smooth, well-colored image.
