About this deal

I had heard years ago about using straws and connectors, and I think that someone had mentioned using regular straws and the connectors for drip tubing from home depot. Well I tried the drip tubing connectors, and they don’t work with regular straws. They are too small for regular straws, and they are very hard to get into the drip tubing. I saw a play set of straws and connectors at a teacher store, but it was expensive and I wasn’t going to spend that kind of money. Then, a couple of months ago, I was wandering through Marshalls, and found these Connecta Straws for less than 8 dollars. That was a price I was willing to pay (eager even).

A guide to schema play in toddlers / A Guide to Play Schemas

These are some of my four year old son’s favourite words. He is starting to treat them with caution though, having overplayed the ‘surprise’ approach many a time –“I’ve got a surprise if you brush your teeth/eat dinner/stop sitting on my head at 6am.” The excitement is swiftly followed by crushing disappointment when the surprise is revealed to be a kiss from me/an apple/an invisible pet.A schema (also known as a play schema) is like a set of instructions. As adults we use them all the time, and we don’t really notice we’re doing it. Switch on a light or make a sandwich and you are using a schema to do it; a mental model you’ve created through a process of trial and error to find the best and most efficient way of completing your task. Read more about the enveloping schema and how it relates to object permanence and attachment. And read about enveloping’s closest cousin, the containing schema. But there’s another kind of schema – schemas of form, sometimes called graphic schemas. These help us understand how things are arranged. Read more about graphic schemas and children’s drawings here. Why do schemas matter? These schemas are action schemas. They help us to make mental models ofmovements. They help us to represent actions in our minds. So, quite impressed by Galt – not just crayons, lots of lovely things to stimulate little minds and provide entertainment without a touchscreen in sight. It depends. For our purposes we’ll focus on eight, although in theory the number is limitless. Social, communication and language skills are all improved through playing with construction resources.

Understanding that this is a normal urge and allowing it to happen in a safe environment will give your child many happy hours of play. This could also be the worst thing about it though, it is straws…just straws… and for modern children, initial interest might not be held for long enough, less fun than other construction toys, it is harder to achieve a good looking structure with them. I, though, was sold, and with three ‘windmills’ filling my dining table I was very proud of my Connecta Straw windfarm. Again, like the boat, this will grow with the children and enable them to develop their imagination and design as well as fine motor skills and does have something for everyone. In this article, we looked at action schemas. These are how we represent movements in our minds so that we can recreate them at a later time. To support orientation schema play, try walking along walls, rolling down hills, climbing up steps and any kind of movement that requires them to find different heights or positions. Gymnastics, games like Twister, soft play, or a simple trip to the park, are also great for exploring different points of views. And of course, there is always climbing trees. There are designs included to copy, or you can make a design for the student to copy. We made some letters and worked on a helicopter. It can be difficult, but is rewarding because the shapes look very cool when done. Play encourages creativity, imagination, perseverance and the development of language and social skills. Schemas help us make sense of the world. They are mental models ofour current thinking. We update them over time as new information comes in.

Athey, C. (2007). Extending thought in young children : a parent-teacher partnership. 2nd ed. London: Chapman.Does your child like to arrange her toys just-so? Does he spend hours lining his cars up in a row or find pleasure in creating scenes or displays? Then your child is exploring their positioning schema. Positioning provides early foundations for many key skills and activities, from laying the table and placing shoes under pegs, to creating patterns in maths and maintaining neat work in school books. Children can work together to design and build intricate and thoughtful structures using their creativity, imagination and logical thinking. Like all schema play, development of the enclosing schema happens naturally. But if you know to look out for it, you can provide opportunities to practice and improve. Swiss psychologist, Jean Piaget, noticed that children of a similar age all make the same kinds of mistakes. This led him to speculate that learning happens in stages and that as children grow they progress to higher levels. Part of his theory considered how schema play enabled this transition. You can read more about it here. How many schemas are there? Here are some of the most commonly recognised schemas in toddlers. They’re mostly based around movement, though in principle a schema can be about anything. Trajectory schema
