In use, we found the Canon EOS 650D / Rebel T4i to be a responsive and versatile camera that almost never got in the way of picture taking. As noted earlier, the auto focus was fast when using the optical viewfinder, and not always painstakingly slow when using Live View, either. Its continuous shooting speed is good for its class, though its six-frame raw buffer is smaller than we'd like. It takes a bit of time for the camera to fully start up if you wait for the sensor cleaning cycle to be completed, but as sensor cleaning can always be interrupted at a half-press of the shutter release, this is not a real issue. The only thing we found to be truly and somewhat inexplicably slow was entering Live View - it invariably took several seconds for the camera to raise its mirror and display the live image.

Also new to the 650D is a Multi Shot Noise Reduction feature. This basically combines four images into one to reduce the effects of noise. In addition, there’s also a new Handheld Night Scene mode that works on much the same principle of combining multiple images into one, although its primary goal is to reduce blur rather than noise. While the 650D offers a choice of six white balance presets, there isn’t any way to set it numerically using the Kelvin scale. This does strike us as a rather odd omission, given how it’s a fairly standard feature on other DSLRs, even entry-level ones. That said, the camera does allow you to make small adjustments towards particular colour hues, which can be quite useful.Based on the CIPA Standard and using the batteries and memory card format supplied with the camera, except where indicated Alongside the EOS 650D, Canon has introduced the 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM zoom and EF 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens. These two optics both use linear stepper motors for autofocus, hence their 'STM' designation. This type of motor is commonly used in lenses for mirrorless cameras as it offers the potential for fast, silent focusing during video recording, and is especially well-suited to working with contrast detection AF. However, this marks the first time this particular technology has been used in a conventional SLR system. Both lenses feature 'focus-by-wire' manual focus - as opposed to mechanically-coupled focus rings - and allow for full-time manual focus when the lens is set to AF mode, although only while the shutter button is held in the 'half-press' position. Essentially a more extreme version of the well-established Picture Styles, Creative Auto offers nine options including Standard, Vivid, Soft, Warm, Intense, Cool, Brighter, Darker and Monochrome, all of which can be interactively tweaked to suit your taste. Standard In case you're wondering, the touch-screen automatically switches off when you raise the Canon EOS 650D to your eye, so you won't tweak settings with your nose while you're taking pictures. In terms of looks and feel, the EOS 650D is almost identical to the 600D, and there are only a few small button changes: the Menu and Info buttons are circular, and you can switch to either On, Off or Movie mode straight from the On/Off switch. Center point is high precision, double cross-type at f/2.8 One of the key aims for the manufacturer was to make the new camera easier to use, so it has given the Canon 650D new automatic shooting modes as well as a touch-sensitive vari-angle LCD screen. There's also a healthy smattering of more advanced features to keep experienced photographers happy.You can also swipe and pinch-zoom on the touch-screen (as you would on an iPhone or iPad) which makes it faster and fun when you're reviewing your images. Straight out of the camera, the EOS 650D take brilliant photos. Images are full of contrast and colourful, but not unnaturally so, or overly saturated which can be the case with other similarly priced D-SLRs. The Canon 650D also coped well when shooting in difficult lighting conditions, such as into the sun, and still managed to capture good detail in both the shadows and highlights. Canon EOS 650D: ISO performance While the Canon EOS 650D’s top 5fps burst speed still falls short of rivals such as the Sony A57 and Pentax K-30, it’s still an improvement over the 4fps of the Nikon D5100. That said, we were unable to record the claimed 22 consecutive JPEG frames, even when using the fastest memory card available and with all processing options kept to a minimum. As is Canon's way, the EOS 650D doesn't directly replace the EOS 600D in the overall lineup. Instead the older model will remain in the line and effectively drop down a notch to the position currently occupied by the EOS 550D / Rebel T2i, which will be discontinued. The following images are all 100% crops taken from the nut at the centre of the image above.In summary the new 650D / Rebel T4i is the most complicated yet friendly mid-range Canon DSLR yet, truly a camera that you can grow into as your photography skills develop. It only misses out on our highest Essential award because of the still slow Live View auto-focusing and a small price increase over the 600D, but is more than deserving of our still-coveted Highly Recommended award. Canon has also added two new Creative filters, Art Bold and Water Painting Effect, which can be applied when reviewing images. Although we found both of these pretty garish. The new Canon EOS 650D is a user-friendly enthusiast-level D-SLR full of new tech and functions, including a new touch-screen, and much more than a simple upgrade from the Canon EOS 600D (which it now sits above in the range). As well as helpful intelligent auto modes there are a wealth of advanced features available as your camera skills and photography progresses.

Although it's overflowing with functions and features, there's still lots of easy auto and scene modes to do the hard work for you if you prefer. The EOS 650D also gets a new Multi-Shot Noise Reduction setting, which automatically take four shots in succession and combines them together to create one low-noise image. We found this worked even better at reducing noise in-camera compared to the basic High NR setting. Metering is handled via the 650D’s iFCL 63-zone metering system, and for the most part this proves highly accurate with no particular bias towards shadows or highlights, including high-contrast situations. The Auto Lighting Optimizer works well too, although it can make certain images – particularly those captured in high-contrast conditions – look a little HDR-esque, which may not be to everyone’s tastes. So having 5fps capability in a camera at the Canon 650D's level is quite a bonus. It's fast enough for most wildlife, action and sports photography.
Ease of Use
The Canon EOS 650D has taken beginner-enthusiast D-SLRs to the next level. Although it 'only' has an 18-megapixel sensor, image quality is great, and high ISO performance is strong. Thanks to the Digic 5 processor, it will also blast off 5fps to help you keep up with fast-moving subjects. Plus there's the lovely adjustable touch-screen tech to enhance the user experience. Canon has exceeded expectations to deliver touchscreen functionality that actually changes the whole user experience, rather than one that just allows certain functions to be selected via the screen. In fact, the only minor niggle we have are that the on-screen controls are relatively small, which might make operation slightly hard work for anyone with sausage-like fingers. The EOS 650D (like the Canon EOS 600D, but unlike the normal LCD on the Nikon D3200) also has a Vari-angle LCD, which helps when shooting at awkward angles, up high or low down, and you can flip it round for some fun self-portraits. Indeed the headline specifications - 18MP CMOS sensor, 9-point AF sensor, 3:2 flip-out 1.04m dot screen are all familiar from the 600D. Look a bit closer, however, and each of these has been significantly improved, with an eye both to more seasoned users who demand SLR performance and compact camera upgraders who want a familiar feeling interface. The 650D also gains significance because it forms the basis of the Canon EOS M, the company's long-awaited entry into the mirrorless interchangeable lens market.
