>> I think a big thing is that this book isn’t sure what it wants to be. Is it middle grade? Is it young adult? It leans more towards middle grade, and yet, has its moments of YA. And middle grade just doesn’t work for a story like this. It doesn’t feel as serious a problem because Oppel is unable to dive deep into the horrors of these plants, the fear and paranoia of the people. It's pretty hard not to read this and think or compared it to the Heartstopper series. Ari reminds me a bit of Charlie for some reason too. Forgiveness and friendship. Bravery in the face of the unknown. Trust in scientists and law enforcement during an emergency. the romance. there was genuinely no reason for the two mcs to like each other at all, let alone fall in love. Hector deserved so much better.

Get started Close THE TIME JUMPS. these random leaps made the story feel incredibly disjointed and as if entire parts of the story were missing. I was honestly worried that my e-copy of Bloom was malfunctioning and it took me a while to figure out that... those gaps were intentional?? It’s about learning to see and to love what is in front of us, and how that seeing and loving helps us bloom. Some elements were really horror-like in this novel and I would only suggest letting kids read this who have a natural tendency to seek scary stuff out. But the main perspective of the book is from her husband: how he sees things, how he interprets things, and how he copes with keeping his family intact after his wife's accident.I loved that in the book it is the children that teach the old man how to love again. What else do you think we can learn about life from children? John Strasheim – The main character. Works as a cobbler on Ganymede, but is also a very good amateur journalist. It is the latter skill which causes him to be selected for the journey to the Earth. It was sturdy, its sheath bristling with a spiral of tiny hairs. The very tip of the plant was pointy. My favourite section of the book is part two, “The Treasury of Plants”, in which Adrian’s brilliant photography and his eye for composition shines through. The detailed naming of the plants alongside the images and in the text is so helpful, which reflects the attention given to labelling within the garden itself.

But there is so much more to this book. I knew of the project long before it was turned in to a book let alone one that had international distribution. The fact that this part wild magpie took to the family and as much adopted them as they did it is incredible but the healing (and I much as much emotional as well as physical) that came about because of it is just as remarkable. Tug Jinacio – A Response lieutenant, responsible for handling emergencies on the Pasteur (ex. fire, bloom, etc.) Killed in the hangar bloom. Our story takes place on a small island, and our main focus is three younger characters who are somewhat isolated from their peers. We have fostered Seth, Anaya who is allergic to everything and Petra who is allergic to water. We are not quite sure what unites these three at first, but when the rain comes we start to get little clues that there might be more going on than we might have ever dreamed of. I’m a big fan of Tiny Owl Publishing! What was it like working together? How excited were you to discover they would be publishing your story?

I started my writing career aged nine when my mum gave me a WHSmith diary and from then on I was hooked. I decided that the only thing worth doing in my life was writing and that one day, very soon, I'd write books. WUT. Wow. What a cliffhanger. Holy. Read this is less than 24 hours because I could NOT put it down. How to keep a balance between design and ‘right plant’, ‘right place’ and need for change as the garden grows and develops. Adrian has continually adapted his garden as the once empty windswept meadow became sheltered and shaded. Flooding still happens from time to time, spring frosts seek out early flowers, occasional gale blows the tops out of trees. And then there is the wildlife... I also found Seth and Anaya’s so wholesome. I will be displeased if it turns into romance. (And if there is a love triangle – lord help me.) I appreciated the portrayal of Seth as a kid living in foster care. It breaks the mold you often see of foster kids in middle grade. Bloom explicitly takes place in Canada, with the primary settings being Salt Spring Island and Vancouver. I used to get annoyed at familiar settings as a kid. I wanted to experience far off, distant, unfamiliar places in my fiction. But now I find it kind of fun to read about a location I know. There’s even a Scotiabank reference. 😛Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Sex, Romance & Nudity in your kid's entertainment guide. Get started Close Ari tries to solve her problems by hiring someone for the bakery, and at that point, Hector enters, who is in town to fix his grandmother who died, but who is studying cooking.
